Big, tall quarto sized trade softcover, bound in glossy laminate, with red endpapers. Stated First Edition. From the publisher's blurb, "English in Print from Caxton to Shakespeare to Milton examines the history of early English books, exploring the concept of putting the English language into print with close study of the texts, the formats, the audiences, and the functions of English books. Lavishly illustrated with more than 130 full-color images of stunning rare books, this volume investigates a full range of issues regarding the dissemination of English language and culture through printed works, including the standardization of typography, grammar, and spelling; the appearance of popular literature; and the development of school grammars and dictionaries . . . The study nearly mirrors the chronological coverage of Pollard and Redgrave's famous Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640), beginning with William Caxton, England's first printer, and ending with John Milton, the English language's most eloquent defender of the freedom of the press in his Areopagitica of 1644." Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. xiv, 1-234 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. From the flap: "Jaroslav Pelikan begins by discussing the philological foundations of the "reformation" of the Biblical text, focusing on the revival of Greek and Hebrew language study and the important contributions to textual criticism by humanist scholars. He then examines the changing patterns of interpretation and communication of the Biblical text, the proliferation of vernacular versions of scripture and their impact on various national cultures, and the impact of the Reformation Bible on art, music, and literature of the period. The book is richly illustrated with examples of early printed editions of Bibles, commentaries, sermons, vernacular translations, and other works with Biblical themes, all of which are identified and discussed." The author examines a wide variety of religious, literary, and historical sources, which record interpretations of sartorial attempts to overcome gender hierarchy and also illustrate, mainly through the device of inversion, a remarkably sustained desire to examine and reexamine the nature of social gender identities.".

Focused on the compelling idea that our engagement with the Word of God is in many ways influenced by its format, and that the history of biblical format warrants more study. Professor Ryrie invited several friends to help him make connections between format and meaning. This catalogue has made significant contributions to biblical studies by describing and identifying the importance of the history of formating the Bible.

"When Johannes Reuchlin published hisAugenspiegel (Eye Glasses) in 1511, just in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair, he knew it would cause a tremendous stir. After all, Reuchlin had decided to defend Jewish writings-and Judaism itself-against the combined forces of the emperor and the highest ecclesiastical authorities in Germany. It is remarkable, or, as Josel of Rosheim said, "miraculous, " that the Jews and Reuchlin prevailed and the books were preserved. The dramatic story of this moment in Jewish-Christian relations is retold in this exhibition through the very books that flamed the controversy. The exhibition is an international effort involving two American libraries and three German institutions. Inspired by the 500th anniversary of the appearance of Reuchlin'sEye Glasses, we have undertaken this project on two continents and at four venues. TheRare Book & Manuscript Libraryof theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignand theHebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion(HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, collaborated with theInstitut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, theMuseum Johannes Reuchlin in Pforzheim, and theJewish Museum of Frankfurt, the crucial location for the historic events 500 years ago. Rare imprints from the pamphlet wars surrounding the Jewish Book Controversy are on display, as well as important works on both sides of the Renaissance humanist movement to recover ancient sources, including those written in Hebrew. Working together with David Gilner of theHUC-JIR, Fritz Backhaus of theJewish Museum in Frankfurt, Michael Matthäus of theInstitut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, as well as Christoph Timm and Isabel Greschat of the city of Pforzheim, we have produced this exhibition to commemorate Johannes Reuchlin and the Jewish Book Controversy. But we are also celebrating what Reuchlin stands for today, most importantly, religious tolerance, respect for books and people, and the power of knowledge to break down prejudice and build respect and understanding for cultural differences" (U of Illinois, 2012) .
