Ford wrote more than at first appears, confessing to London that he used assumed names whilst begging, stealing or borrowing the rest. He encouraged his local business backers to submit factual content for the Encyclopedia and Guide instead of offering them display ads. The content is very rich on Hawaiian and wider Pacific culture, history, and geography, with additional regular features on Pacific personalities (profiling Club members and others), poetry and literature. [104] leaves of colour lithograph wallpaper samples (all with line, and pricing information on verso of each sample), nearly half are colour lithoprint border rolls, some are raised embossed, others textured. Half-black cloth over textured black softcovers, raised embossed gilt Arts & Crafts lettering & decoration, punch sewn at upper margin w/ black silk hanging braid (some edgewear, faint tidemark to fore-edge of first couple corners, minor spotting & soiling on front cover, a few samples with closed tears, some fragile, and one border w/ only stub remaining, a few extras laid-in at points), but the samples themselves are bright. First edition of this exceptionally scarce wallpaper sample catalogue providing an exceptional selection of wallpaper designs for fin-de-siecle Victorian homes. Featuring designs executed by Ballou, these wallpapers encompass a broad range of deep burgundy, green, blue, pink, and red jewel tones, as well as an emphasis on floral decorations, and ornate borders. Many of the designs feature geometric or mottled patterns, and still others bear the Wallace Wall Paper Co. imprint, which was a wallpaper firm Ballou had designed with before striking out on his own with Dickson. Ballou (1864-1932) was a Prophetstown, NY native and wallpaper designer who had begun working for paper mills by the 1890's, and by 1902 had established his own firm. Financed by Dickson (1855-1918), vice-president of the First National Bank of Mount Vernon, NY, the company operated until after 1910, and then it disappears from street directories and business listings. Ballou would go onto become a sales manager for paper jobbers, and later a colorist for New York textile manufacturers. No copies located of any Ballou-Dickson Wall Paper Sample catalogues, small chromolithograph business card at Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
