It seems extraordinary that they were able to pull this off during wartime restrictions, and Dickens would have relished the shabby-genteelness of it. The menu is shakily printed in a faded blue on a 10 x 16.5 cm piece of cream card, with rounded edges. At foot: Holborn Restaurant 7th February 1942 . The menu is headed: THE DICKENS FELLOWSHIP / 130th Anniversary of the / Birthday of Charles Dickens / Chairman: WALTER DEXTER, Vice-President / Speakers: HUMPHREY HOUSE, JAMES AGATE . The description of the fare follows in silk-purse style: Hors-d uvre / - / Potage Garbure / Poisson poché Boistelle / Choux de Bruxelles / Pommes Vapeur / - / Bombe glacée Fraisette / Gaufrettes / - / Café . The four signatures are as follows. At top right: Louis B. Frewer . In right-hand margin: Humphrey House. And in left hand margin: James Agate. and Walter Dexter . See image.

Second edition, revised and enlarged. Octavo. pp xxxii, 579. Frontispiece photograph of the author and 33 plates; 5 maps. Preface by Graham Storey, who completed the editing of this volume, Humphrey House having died in 1955. ''The edition now includes all Hopkins's previously unpublished poems and fragments from two early Diaries, which are printed almost complete; the Journal for the greater part of 1866 to 1868, discovered in 1947, which gives details of his conversion and decision to become a Jesuit; and five remarkably mature undergraduate Essays. A full collection of Hopkins's drawings is given, including many of the sketches with which he illustrated his two Diaries. John Piper contributes a note on his work as an artist. There is also an Appendix of his music, prepared by John Stevens, containing all Hopkins's known settings to songs, most of them not published before.'' (blurb). 159 pages of notes. Six Appendixes. On the front free endpaper is the ownership signature of writer and biographer Anthony Holden. Very near fine in very good, price-clipped dustwrapper a bit rubbed at the edges and with a few nicks.
