Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 18 volumes, 4to (11 1/4 x 8 7/8 in.; 286 x 225 mm, uncut). Covers the years 1665-1800. Published 1809. Later binding in very good condition occasional dampstaining and scattered foxing "If all the books in the world except the Philosophical Transactions were destroyed, it is safe to say that the foundations of physical science would remain unshaken, and that the vast intellectual progress of the last two centuries would be largely, although incompletely, recorded." (Thomas Huxley, quoted in Norman) Founded in 1660, the Royal Society of London is the oldest scientific society in Great Britain, and one of the oldest in Europe. By the eighteenth-century, the achievements of the Royal Society were internationally famous. Philosophical Transactions, begun in 1665, was one of the earliest periodicals in the West, whose long papers, book reviews and notices of work in progress became the primary means of communication between English and Continental scientists, and served as a model for later periodicals used by scientific academies.
