PROPHET BY EXPERIENCE by Jack Iams 1943 1st Edition Published by William Morrow & Co. green cloth Jack Iams is an author who was known primarily for his mystery novels. They deserve to be much better known, and so does Prophet by Experience. This is a fine, funny book. Henry Hylobates Hoolock starts out as a young man in Pennsylvania studying for the ministry, following in the path of his father. However, when his father dies, he follows a different path - one that goes into the woods, where he lives as a hermit in a cave. (Hylobates, we are told, means "one who walks in the woods.") Henry keeps up with the news by subscribing to Birdseye, a news magazine with a considerable resemblance to Time, including using Time's peculiar sentence structure. After fifteen years, he writes a letter (on birchbark) thanking Birdseye. That action leads to great life changes for Henry, some of them pleasant, some.not so pleasant. ?some cloth wear, rubbing, clean and tight?
