Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Illustrated by Cruikshank I. R. (illustrator). Presumed Reissue?. No Date but this is probably the 1877 reissue. (4) + 319 pp. With 8 full-page & various vignette b/w illustrations by Robert Cruikshank. In the original Burgundy pictorial cloth blocked in black and gold, a little rubbed, very sl. faded to the spine, and a small 'nibble' to the bottom of the rear board but overall a VG sound copy. This appears to be a reissue of the First Series of 'Cruikshank at Home' by Isaac Robert Cruikshank (and possibly with Robert Seymour and Samuel Slader ?) which first appeared in the 1840s.?? Includes 'Other Tales of Interest' and in fact 'Mary Ogilvie' only covers the first 139 pp of the book. There are small (2.3 cm x 1.5 cm) oval library stamps (easily erasable!) to the reverse of the full page illustrations and one at the end of the book, but NO other indications that this was once in a library. Overall an Excellent copy. Quite Scarce.; 60062; Ex-Library (Minimal Marks); 8vo.

Condition: Good. hand colored plates [10 not counted in the pagination] + [10] hand coloured text illustrations by Robert Cruikshank lg.8vo cloth spined patterned boards [8pp incl.the frontispiece + "explanation" +titlepage + contents] +97pp. The contents calls for a further leaf of"Correspondence relative to Points of Misery" However none of the COPAC copies that give collations has this leaf, they call for 97 pages as ours. Corners of title restored & some other signs of use but a good wide margined copy. Since we have found no other copies hand colored we must assume that the coloring was done later. It is done very much in the colors and style of the 19th century and certainly generally enhances the illustrations. *The miseries include those of an Athor, of travelling by coach, In a London Lodging, of love and matrimony and of borrowing among other humorous stories. 1 volume. Hardcover.

Second edition with these illustrations by Issac Robert Cruikshank (misspelt Cruickshank on the engraved title pages). Two volumes. Publisher's original red-brown cloth with printed paper title labels to the spines. Page edges uncut. Complete with the half titles present in each volume. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece to volume one, additional engraved title pages to each volume and 25 full-page woodcut plates by Cruikshank. A very good set, the bindings square and firm with bumping to the corners and a couple of minor splits to the heads of the spines. The contents with a little cracking to the rear hinge of volume two, the engraved portrait frontispiece with a diagonal crease, a little raggedness to the edges and some spotting, light scattered foxing to the preliminary pages, and a neat contemporary previous owner's inscription to the title pages ("J: Waites - St: Johns Coll:-") are otherwise in very good order. A charming, unsophisticated set, uncommon thus. A nicely illustrated edition of Cervantes' classic work, often labelled as the first modern novel, first issued in this form in 1824 by Knight and Lacy of London. Like his father and more famous brother George (to which the present work is often misattributed), Issac Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856) was a pioneer in the history of comic illustration. The present work forms one of his most notable series of illustrations. Most appealing in the original cloth. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
