Gen. xxxviii. 23. And he said, Let it not be known that a Woman came into the Floor. Ruth iii. 14. I made a Covenant with my Eyes, why then should I think upon a Maid? Job xxxi. I. There be three Things which are too wonderful for me, yea four which I know not: the Way of an Eagle in the Air, the Way of a Serpent upon a Rock, the Way of a Ship in the Midst of the Sea, and the Way of a Man with a Maid. Prov. xxx. 18, 19. But a Woman among all those have I not found. Eccles. vii. 28.' A series of lectures on various aspects of sex in the Bible, including whoring, "the way of a man with a maid", and men who have their "Privy Member cut off" ('men are most commonly wounded by rushing madly into places of danger, and if so, must certainly take the consequence upon their own tails'). The only copy to appear in auction was in THE LIBRARY OF THE LATE ERIC QUAYLE (PART TWO) Bonham's 4 April 2006, a bound copy that made 963 pounds inc premium. A real curiosity, prurient in tone with a touch of brimstone - disapproving mention of 'Bagnios' and Vauxhall and Ranelagh Gardens and lines like '.the way of a man with a maid is, to Stare Ð Ogle Ð Cringe Ð Fawn Ð Flatter Ð Crowd Close Ð discharge a volley of impertinence Ð conduct her to her carriage Ð squeeze her hand Ð give her a languishing look, beg leave to wait upon her home, or next day to a dish of coffee Ð tell her a thousand lies Ð swear eternal fidelity Ð that you were dying for her Ð that she looks like an angel.' Rebound in recent plain marbled wraps with a neat title label onset to the front. Very good indeed. Slight loss at top corner of pages 39-42 not affecting text.
