No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. 1860. James Imray and Son (1860). •This antique nautical chart/map has two complete joined sheets and one partial; 25 inches, 24 inches, and 9 inches. It measures 39 inches tall by 58 inches wide. ?I believe When published it measured around 74 inches wide With three joined engraved sheets. •Mos…t of these early 'Blueback' Maps of the Indian Ocean from Africa to New Zealand produced by J. Imray & Son, that we have referenced, are 1874 to 1878. This one contains the statement "Additions to 1860" which predates these others by at least 14 years. The title block (what remains of it) is quite different as well. •The chart area covers the majority of the Indian Ocean from the Eastern edge of Madagascar all the way to the entire country of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean, and everything in between. •The included title fragment shows part of the Eastern coast of Africa and most of the island of Madagascar. Please view the photographs carefully. ?There is chipping along some of the edges and some professionally repaired tears, with archival tape, on the back. ?Some creasing is evident in the body. ?No holes or chunks missing other than most of the left-hand panel/sheet. ?The original binding cloth remains intact on the right-hand side. ?I have been able to salvage part of the original title and will of course include that with this chart. ?NOTE: The darkish areas are shadows, NOT on the map. I will take more photos later with better light, a few to show the blue back as well. This will look nice framed as is, however It certainly is also possibly to have the title reworked by a map conservation company, perhaps adding a new cloth edge to the left side, top and bottom edge repairs as well. The few complete maps by this company, of the Indian Ocean, for sale online were in the $6000 to $8000 range, however none were this early of a date. James Imray & Son (illustrator).
