Drawing on the insights of Greek philosophers, Arab scholars, and medieval physicians, the author reveals the secrets of reading faces. The author examines the shape and size of the face, forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, and ears, explaining how each feature corresponds to specific personality traits and physical characteristics. Physiognomy, the author argues, is not merely a parlor trick but a valuable tool for self-knowledge and understanding others. This book delves into the fascinating history of physiognomy and its use in different cultures. It discusses the ethical implications of judging people by their appearance and explores the potential dangers of misinterpretation. Ultimately, the author argues that physiognomy, when practiced with wisdom and compassion, can provide valuable insights into the human condition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketFirst edition of this copiously illustrated treatise on chiromancy, physiognomy and astrology, which includes three fine woodcuts by Hans Baldung, former apprentice to Albrecht Dürer. They are: the large title portrait of the author, the final full-page decorative arms and one physiognomical diagram of a man and a woman (p. 5 in the second part) - all three show clear echoes of Dürer's style. The book was printed for the author, who was an adviser to Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, the dedicatee (it was to Cardinal Albrechtt that Martin Luther had addressed his 95 Theses in 1517). Indagine (1467-1537) was a Carthusian prior and humanist theologian who saw no conflict between orthodox faith and the occult sciences. The book was widely read across Europe and frequently reprinted, with a small format octavo edition from Frankfurt in the same year, a vernacular German edition appearing the following year, and an English translation in 1558 (with at least 12 more editions in English before 1700). It was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1559.Though we have been unable to identify the early owner of this copy, whose monogram appears on each cover, the early inscription is from Rainold, Marquis of Canhilac (Languedoc). Folio (298 × 200 mm), ff. [2], 30, [41] (misnumbered [1]-38, 47-48, [1]), [1] (blank), the two unnumbered preliminary leaves bearing the dedication bound between leaves 3 & 4, complete. Woodcut portrait of the author to title and his arms to the final leaf, both by Hans Baldung, 37 large woodcut of hands/palms (one being just three fingers), 26 astrological emblems, 11 pairs of physiognomic heads (one pair by Baldung) and 26 diagrammatic horoscopes. 2 large woodcut initials: 9-line G and 8-line S, the latter designed by Hans Weiditz. Old waterstain affecting the lower quarter of pages throughout, light at the opening becoming heavier towards the end. Contemporary calf, spine with six raised bands, gilt supralibros to both covers with the unidentified monogram 'WW' (or possibly 'WM' or 'MW'). The binding quite worn with portions of the spine lacking at head and foot (the latter being a whole panel, exposing one band and the sewing structure). Early inscription to title 'Me dono dedit Rainaldo Marquesius a Canilhiaco'. An interesting, unsophisticated copy. [Adams I 88; VD16 R 3108; Mende, Hans Baldung Grien, 458-460. Worldcat: Cambridge, Leeds, Folger (portrait mostly lacking), Duke, Princeton (2 copies, one lacking a leaf), Philadelphia College of Physicians and UCLA outside continental Europe.].

Add to basketRare third edition in the original Latin, printed with the woodblocks of the first (1522) edition by the same publisher, of a classic account of palm reading, physiognomy (determining personality from facial features and the shape of the head) and several aspects of astrology, including horoscopes and the effect of the sun, moon and planets on health and on the temperaments associated with the four humours. The text is divided into six "libri", but the first is unnumbered on the title page so that it numbers the others 1-5. The woodcuts (including the author's portrait and coat-of-arms) were executed for the first edition and some have been attributed to Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Wechtlin. They include six fantastic chariots carrying male and female figures representing the moon and the five planets pulled by a variety of birds, a basilisk or cockatrice, wolves and a pair of women, with zodiac signs on the wheels. While Ratdolt had published woodcuts of the sun, moon and planets riding chariots in 1491, the present woodcuts are much more sophisticated and probably inspired the ca. 1568 engraved series by Maarten van Heemskerck (New Hollstein 546-552). Johannes Indagine von Hagen (also sometimes recorded as Rosenbach) (ca. 1460?-1537) was a priest at Steinheim am Main, near Hanau, from 1488 to his death, though he also held positions at nearby Frankfurt. Though sympathetic toward the Reformation, he disputed accusations of Luthernaism. Pope Paul IV placed his present work on the index of prohibited books in 1559.With a water stain in the upper outside corner throughout and a corner torn off the final leaf (not approaching the woodcut arms), but otherwise in very good condition. With a large woodcut portrait of the author on the title page, the author's full-page woodcut coat of arms on the recto of the otherwise blank last leaf, about 93 woodcut illustrations (including 3 hand blocks and a few square astrological diagram blocks used repeatedly with varying content), 3 woodcut decorated initials (3 series) plus 1 repeat. £1850 8vo, ff. 143, A-R8 S6. Italic letter, a little Roman. Large woodcut vignette with portrait of the author on t-p, historiated initials and numerous half- and full-page illustrations. Printer's device on recto of last leaf, ms. mathematical calculations on verso. Copiously annotated and underlined by an early hand, mostly in the chiromancy section. First three initial leaves particularly worn and soiled, especially the t-p: corners and margins damaged with paper loss, central area with wormholes affecting the vignette, loss of text and marginalia. Occasional dampstaining and spotting. In contemporary limp wallet vellum, rather worn, lower corner of front cover torn apart, hole on rear cover, visible ties, ink title to spine, little wormed. A complete, interesting copy, beautifully illustrated, despite the poor condition of the t-p. Rare illustrated Renaissance work on astrology, physiognomy and chiromancy. Chiromancy is the art of reading character and divination of the future by interpretation of the lines and undulations on the palm of the hand. Mediaeval chiromancy was pressed into service by the witch-hunters; after a period of disrepute, it flourished again in the Renaissance. Johannes Indagine (ca. 1467-1537, also known as Johannes Rosenbach, or von Hagen), a Carthusian monk, was perhaps the most highly regarded German chiromancer of the sixteenth century and "an extremely learned man in many fields" (Gettings, An Illustrated History of Palmistry, p. 177). This work was banned by the Inquisition, having been placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum under the decree of Pope Paul IV in 1559 (cf. Thorndike). "Possevin holds that this was on account of the author's astrology, but the other astrologers are all in Class 2. Indagine was placed in Class 1 for his letter to O. Brunfels, published at the end of the volume (which had undoubtedly come to attention in Rome): for this, the author was considered a Lutheran" (Reusch). Illustrated throughout with woodcuts by several artists, showing physiognomic heads and mythological designs representing the signs of the Zodiac, as well as chiromantic hands and numerous astrological diagrams. The work had a great effect on the study of chiromancy and is quoted down to our own day.
