A tight, clean, sound copy in green cloth covered boards with very minor overall shelf wear with some light tanning of the outside paper edges. The dust jacket has minor overall shelf wear with light overall rubbing, some very light edge wear on the top and bottom spine edges and a small (about 1") closed tear on the front at the bottom right corner. 'Schönge Tage' (Beautiful Days) and 'Schattseite' (Shady Side) are autobiographical novels telling the story of the early life of the main character, Holl. 'Beautiful day': On his father's the young Holl is tolerated only as cheap labor. Here there are only patriarchal laws, on the one hand, the farmer, Herr, and on the other, the servants, maids and day laborers. These people's speech and consciousness are blunted by the hard work and it is only in violent outbursts and primitive sexuality they are able to express their feelings. When he reaches his early teenage years Holl begins his process of liberation. His growing insubordination elicits more and more dull aggression. After eleven years of fear and humiliation he finds the strength to escape his serfdom and leave his father's farm and begin forging a new life for himself. Holl escapes the 'Inferno' of the farm, but ends up in the 'shadow side' (Schattseite) of the small business workplace. His entourage has made short work of him: a father who slandered him, a mother from whom he is estranged, a stepmother who does not know him. In the hope of finding someone like a mentor, he becomes a blacksmith's apprentice but his 'Master', the contractor, ends up being no more than what he is, no better and no worse and Holl remains only the apprentice. The village boys involve him in a wild brawl and his first sexual experiences are disappointing. Holl wants more and so he reads and asks questions, trying to learn, think and understand more life and his world. And his life does inprove, first as a blacksmith's apprenticeship, then at the vocational school, and finally at the factory. Frank Innes was born in 1944 in Krimml (Salzburg). From 1950 to 1961 he lived on his father's farm. After an apprenticeship as a blacksmith, he attended high school while working, and then studied Germanic literature at the University of Salzburg. In 1973 he received an Austrian State Scholarship for Literature in 1975 the Bremen Literature Prize. 'Schöne Tage': Auf dem Hof seines Vaters wird der junge Holl als billige Arbeitskraft geduldet. Hier gelten noch patriarchalische Gesetze, auf der einen Seite der Bauer und Herr, auf der anderen die Knechte, Mägde und Taglöhner. Von der schweren Arbeit abgestumpft, sind diese Menschen zur Sprach- und Bewusstlosigkeit verurteilt, und nur in brutalen Ausbrüchen und primitiver Sexualität vermögen sie ihre Gefühle zu äussern. In seinen frühen Jugendjahren kann Holl nur kurze Eindrücke ordnen, aber allmählich setzt für ihn ein Prozess der Befreiung ein, seine Aufsässigkeit entspringt nicht mehr dumpfer Aggression, sondern wird gezielte Provokation. Nach elf Jahren der Angst und der Erniedrigung findet er die Kraft, seine >>Leibeigenschaft<< abzuschütteln, den Hof des Vaters zu verlassen und mit einer Schmiedelehre ein neues Leben zu beginnen. Holl ist zwar dem bäuerlichen Inferno entronnen, gerät aber auf die 'Schattseite' der kleingewerblichen Arbeitswelt. Seine Umgebung macht kurzen Prozess mit ihm. Ein Vater, der ihn verleumdet, eine Mutter, der er fremd geworden ist, eine Stiefmutter, die ihn nicht mehr kennt. Für seinen Lehrherrn, der kein Unternehmer mehr sein will und doch einer ist, bleibt er der Lehrbub, die Dorfburschen verwickeln ihn in eine wüste Rauferei, und die ersten sexuellen Erfahrungen bleiben enttäuschend.
