Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. He was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. He knew the rough life the streets. He overcame a barely average start at school. Then he joined the Army. The rest is history--but a history that un…til now has been known only on the surface. Here, for the first time, he himself tells us how it happened, in a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier's directness. He writes of the anxieties and missteps as well as the triumphs that marked his rise to four-star general, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mastermind of Desert Storm, and now the man the country would most like to draft as President just as it drafted General Eisenhower before him in 1952. We see Powell growing up, getting into mischief, going to church with his father, working in a bottling plant, joining the ROTC. We follow him as a green young lieutenant on his first foreign posting in Germany, where his ascent is nearly aborted by a blunder on the day he is assigned to guard an atomic cannon. We go on patrol with him into the jungles of Vietnam, where he is wounded, and then, in the first surprise turn of his career, into the every-bit-as-dangerous thickets of Washington bureaucracy as a Pentagon aide in the Carter administration. We see how he handled the humiliations inflicted on him as a black soldier traveling in the Deep South and the unnerving challenges be faced as a battalion commander in Korea, where the army guarding the border with North Korea was plagued by drugs, drinking, a lack of discipline, and racial tension. We are edge-of-the-seat spectators to some of the great international dramas of our time--Desert Storm, the invasion of Panama, the dark dealings of Iran-contra with Ollie North and Bill Casey, the climatic meetings with Gorbachev. And we are present also at the encounters with President Clinton on the controversial question of gays in the military. Colin Powell, moving easily between the Army and high positions in both Republican and Democratic administrations has a unique perspective. As an active soldier, he has experienced the sharp end of political decisions in Washington. As an advice to three Presidents, he has seen how policy is shaped and he has shaped it himself. It was Powell whom President Reagan summoned to the White House to help National Security Advisor Frank Carlucci clean up the mess after the Iran-contra debacle. It was Powell whom President Clinton called back from private life to accompany forever President Carter on his eve-of-war mission to Haiti. Haiti was a consummation of Powell's translation from soldier to statement and popular leader. Not since Dwight Eisenhower has a figure in public life been held in such universal esteem or had so few negatives. Powell gives us behind-the-scenes portraits of Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, of Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf, and many others. This is a book of political excitement and disclosure, but it is much more. It is a life well lived and well told. It is also a view from the mountaintop of the political landscape of America. The book jacket shows some shelf wear. This is an oversized book and will require additional postage. Photo-insert design by Wynn Dan, Book design, Bernard Klein (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. Fourth Printing [stated]. xiv, 482 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Slight wear and soiling to DJ. This definitive military chronicle of the Iraq war--and a searing judgment on the strategic blindness with which America has conducted it--draws on the acc…ounts of senior military officers giving voice to their anger for the first time. Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post senior Pentagon correspondent Thomas E. Ricks's Fiasco is masterful and explosive reckoning with the planning and execution of the American military invasion and occupation of Iraq, based on the unprecedented candor of key participants. The American military is a tightly sealed community, and few outsiders have reason to know that a great many senior officers view the Iraq war with incredulity and dismay. But many officers have shared their anger with renowned military reporter Thomas E. Ricks, and in Fiasco, Ricks combines these astonishing on-the-record military accounts with his own extraordinary on-the-ground reportage to create a spellbinding account of an epic disaster. Thomas Edwin "Tom" Ricks (born September 25, 1955) is an American journalist who writes on defense topics. He is a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. He has reported on military activities in Somalia, Haiti, Korea, the Balkans, Kuwait, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Ricks is author of four nonfiction books: Fiasco: The American Military Adventure In Iraq, The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008, The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today, and Making the Corps. The main points of this hard-hitting indictment of the Iraq war have been made before, but seldom with such compelling specificity. In dovetailing critiques of the civilian and military leadership, Washington Post Pentagon correspondent Ricks (Making the Corps) contends that, under Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Feith, the Pentagon concocted "the worst war plan in American history," with insufficient troops and no thought for the invasion's aftermath. Thus, an under-manned, unprepared U.S. military stood by as chaos and insurgency took root, then responded with heavy-handed tactics that brutalized and alienated Iraqis. Based on extensive interviews with American soldiers and officers as well as firsthand reportage, Ricks's detailed, unsparing account of the occupation paints a woeful panorama of reckless firepower, mass arrests, humiliating home invasions, hostage-taking and abuse of detainees. It holds individual commanders to account, from top generals Tommy Franks and Ricardo Sanchez on down. The author's conviction that a proper hearts-and-minds counterinsurgency strategy might have salvaged the debacle is perhaps naive, and pays too little heed to the intractable ethnic conflicts underlying what is by now a full-blown civil war. Still, Ricks's solid reporting, deep knowledge of the American military and willingness to name names make this perhaps the most complete, incisive analysis yet of the Iraq quagmire. Nicole Larouche (Photo Insert), Gene Thorp (Maps) (illustrator).

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. A single advertising leaflet issued by Harper & Brothers, New York, titled 'Valuable and Interesting Works for Public and Private Libraries.' The sheet lists newly available and standard works from Harper's catalogue, including notable titles by Griffis (Japan), Reclus (Earth and Ocean), Hildreth (United St…ates), Van-Lennep (Bible Lands), and works on pottery, caricature, exploration, and American history. These ephemeral inserts were placed loosely or sewn into Harper books during the early 1880s to promote the firm's broader publishing program. The sheet is printed in black with red vertical type along the left margin and paginated internally as pages 24, indicating it was extracted from a larger multi-page catalogue. Typography and listed publication dates point to production between 1883 and 1885. Very Good. Light age-toning to margins with faint handling wear; no tears or loss. Clean, well-preserved example with strong impression and fully legible text. Harper & Brothers routinely issued multi-page catalogues for insertion into their clothbound books beginning in the 1870s. These were replaced frequently, making specific printings difficult to date; however, cross-referencing publication dates of listed titles is the accepted bibliographic method. Identification & Notes +++ Advertised titles dated no later than 1883 (Griffis's Mikado's Empire, Book II), establishing the printing window as circa 18831885. +++ Includes high-interest subjects in anthropology, geology, exploration, and American history, illustrating Harper's shift toward global and scientific publishing in the late 19th century. +++ Contemporary Harper & Brothers catalogue inserts are rarely found intact due to their ephemeral nature; most were discarded by binders or readers. +++ Red-ink vertical line encourages the reader to request new cataloguesan early example of subscription-based advertising. +++ Found laid into an 1897 volume, consistent with bindery practice of using leftover catalogue sheets as fillers. Subjects: Publishers' ephemera; 19th-century book history; bibliographical advertising. Harper & Brothers; American publishing; 19th-century book trade; catalogue inserts; advertising leaflets; bibliographical ephemera; historical book production.
