The art deco designed "ex-libris" bookplate by artist George Bissell done for Arnold L. Haskell. inside cover. early 20th c designed art paper boards, uncut edges. Boards worn at corners and small area top of spine at rear edge lost, spine rubbed a little and a little surface loss, though minor. Contents Very Good. Large square quarto. * The author survived the Revolution despite being an intellectual, became Curator of Old Masters of The Hermitage also illustrated a work by Pushkin in 1903 "The Bronze Horseman" which earned him a worldwide reputation as a forerunner in the aesthetic art-nouveau movement and a little later the Russian Alphabet 1904 which sells for tens of thousands. He was also founded the "World of Art" movement with Sergei Diaghilev & Leon Bakst and the Ballet Russés School and his designs influenced the modern ballet all through the 20th century. This may be the connection for Arnold Haskell as he was ballet school director and ballet critic at this time? He left Russia in 1927 and settled in Paris as a set designer. He was also related to Peter Ustinov. Christian Brinton was a worldwide noted American art Critic and curator.

Frontispiece in b/w. Illustrated catalogue for the Russian art exhibition held in February of 1929, at the Grand Central Palace in New York City. This massive exhibition sponsored by the Amtorg Trading Corporation, the official trade office of the Soviet Union in the United States, featured more than 600 works by hundreds of Soviet artists across the disciplines of painting, graphic art and sculpture. Displayed in the catalogue are b/w photographic reproductions of work by such noted artists as Nathan Altman (1889-1970), David Shterenberg (1881-1948), El Lissitzky (1890-1941), Aleksei Ilyich Kravchenko (1889-1940), Yuri Pimenov (1903-1977), and Abram Arkhipov (1862-1930), among many others. Contains b/w lithographic images of some of the graphic artist's works, as well as smaller original lithographic head and tailpieces throughout the publication in black. Includes initial text by art critic Christian Brinton (1870-1942) and P. Novitsky, as well as a complete list of works exhibited. Wrappers with some light foxing and staining to the covers.
