Large square quarto. * The author survived the Revolution despite being an intellectual, became Curator of Old Masters of The Hermitage also illustrated a work by Pushkin in 1903 "The Bronze Horseman" which earned him a worldwide reputation as a forerunner in the aesthetic art-nouveau movement and a little later the Russian Alphabet 1904 which sells for tens of thousands. He was also founded the "World of Art" movement with Sergei Diaghilev & Leon Bakst and the Ballet Russés School and his designs influenced the modern ballet all through the 20th century. This may be the connection for Arnold Haskell as he was ballet school director and ballet critic at this time? He left Russia in 1927 and settled in Paris as a set designer. He was also related to Peter Ustinov. Christian Brinton was a worldwide noted American art Critic and curator.
