Condition: Fine. 1st thus. Cloth, F. xviii+166pp, a fine copy. An 1879 novel, the story of which deals with the trouble arising from the indecision of a squire in choosing an heir to his estate. The text follows that which appeared in the 1879 Manchester Weekly News serialization. 375 grams.

Green boards with gilt decorations front and spine, gilt titles on spine. Colour illustrated endpapers. Top edge sprayed brown. Boards very slightly pushed at spine ends, hint of spotting on fore edge, else volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Housed in its slipcase, shelf worn, rubbed on corners, with a little cracking in paper along edges.

Cloth in slipcase. Condition: Good. John Lawrence (illustrator). Illustrated with wood engravings by John Lawrence, octavo, pp 493, very slight foxing to the fore-edge, othwerwise very clean internally, patterned cloth, the spine label slightly scuffed otherwise very good, the slipcase is worn and marked.

Housed and protected in such great condition by original green slipcase gently smudged and sunned, good shelf presence.
