New edition with a biographical and critical introduction by John Hogben. lii, 281pp., a frontispiece and 1 other portrait. top edge gilt. Alexander Smith (1830-67) was a Scottish poet and essayist. Dreamthorp is a collection of essays and probably his best known work, first published in 1863. It is noted especially for the essay A Lark's Flight, in which Smith describes the song of a lark breaking the silence just before the trapdoor is sprung under two condemned men. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling and a white design on the spine and the front board. Top edge gilt. The case of the book is in very good with some shelf wear on the boards and slight fading to the spine. The spine ends are bumped with some fraying to the cloth. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
