Decorative title-page with printer's device. Fascinating work compiling stories of Jewish life, some relating to the religious persecution of the Jews in Spain during the Inquisition. Tales include: The Perez Family; Amete and Yafeh; The Fugitive; The Edict; The Escape; Helon; The Spirit's Entreaty; The Spirit of the Night; The Triumph of Love; and The Vale of Cedars, or The Martyr. Some age wear on binding with head and tail of spine slightly chipped. This work is profusely illustrated with 11 b/w and 1 color full-page illustrations by T. H. Robinson. Minor rubbing on corners, and minor soiling on back cover. Endpapers partly chipped, worn, and taped together. Binding and interior in overall good to very good condition. Grace Aguilar was an early 19th century English novelist descended from Portuguese conversos. She was an advocate of reform and a foe, despite her close association with Christians, of the conversionists. She died at age 31.
