Soft cover. Condition: Fine. [360] pages : illustrations : 24 cm. Reproduction of the Arabic text of ms. 3472 in the Topkapi Sarayi Müzesi, Kütüphane. Text in Arabic, Introduction in English and Turkish. Introduction : The name of the author of this work was Badi'al-Zaman Abu al'Izz Isma'il b. al-Razzaz al-Jazari. His homeland al-Jazira or Mesopotamia lies between the Tigris and the Euphrates. We have not any information about his life story except his own statements in the introduction of his book. He says that he was in the service of al-Salih Nasir al-Din Abi al-Fath Mahmud bin Muhammed bin Qara Arslan bin Dawud ibn Sukman bin Artuq, the king of Diyarbakır. Artuq was one of the generalles of Melih Shah, (1055-1092) the emperor of Artuq had two sons, Ilfhazi and Sukman. Qara Arslan belonged to the Sukman branch of the family. He had spent twenty five years in the service of this family. Before him, he had served his father and his brother. In the preface, he gives the following information on the compilation of his book, "I was in his presence one day and had brought him something which he had ordered me to make. He looked at me and he looked at what I had made and thought about it, without my noticing. He guessed what I had been thinking about, and unveiled unerringly what I had concealed. He said 'You have made peerless devices, and through strength have brought them forth as works; so do not lose what you have wearied yourself with and have plainly constructed. I wish you to compose for me a book which assembles what you have created separately and brings together a selection of individual items and pictures." There are eleven manuscripts of al-Jazari's work in several libraries all over the world. The earliest of all copies, dating 1206 is in the Library of Topqapu Serai, Istanbul No. 3472. This is a fine manuscript, with excellent illustrations. In this facsimile this manuscript of Topqapu is used. …
