This is a book associated with Antony Gormley's habitable sculpture, which also functions as a hotel suite of the Beaumont (hotel), Brown Hart Gardens, in west London. It is ex-libris of the hotel (see image of paste down signed by the sculptor). Describing this book is something of…a challenge and in this sense it perhaps parallels the slightly opaque and elusive nature of the sculpture. So the contents (not listed) include a myriad of mainly b/w or chromatic images of the ROOM, its design papers, the urban sprawl surrounding the hotel, the artists at work, caves, seascapes etc etc. There is also an essay by Margaret Iverson, entitled: Sculpting Darkness. It is an elegantly curated publication with the suitably debossed and discreet book title at the head of the front board (main image), all edges gilt, black coloured endpapers/pastedowns. Condition (external): in a very sound state - slight discolouration/smudging of the upper board in places, plus a little fading of the cloth on the lower one - see relevant images. Internally, the book is again very sound. Possibly hints of tanning though this may reflect more the type of paper employed rather than any ageing processes. pp. 93 (Margaret Iverson's essay) - the many illustrations are generally not paginated. Papered boards with a wood-grain pattern, lettered in black on the front cover; slight wear to the extremities, with some loss to the surface of the spine (presumably as ever…, given the nature of the material); minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy (internally excellent). This retrospective publication includes illustrations of furnishings by early luminaries of Scandinavian design, including Ole Wanscher, Kaj Gottlob, Mogens Lassen, Frits Schegel, Thoresen Lassen, and Flemming Lassen. This is a presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Andreas Jeppe (A.J.) Iversen (1888-1979), the influential designer and cabinetmaker who paved the way for Danish modern style. The inscription reads: 'Hr. Ingeniør Bennike, Med en hjertelig Tak for De Opgaver De har givet mig og den Tillid De derved viste mig. Deres, A.J. Iversen' [Dear Engineer Bennike, With heartfelt thanks for the tasks you have given me and the trust you have thereby shown me. Yours, A.J. Iversen]. The text comprises essays by Iversen ('Konstruktion, Materialer, Kvalitet'), Magnus Stephensen ('Kunsten og Brugen'), and Sigurd Schultz ('Snedker-Historie', a history of modern Danish cabinetmaking). Eigenhändige Handschriften des dänisch-deutschen Zeichners, Karikaturisten, Herausgebers und Verlegers des Simplicissimus Olaf Iversen (1902-1959), verfasst in der frühen Nachkriegszeit. --- Olaf Iversen, der die Rechte an der berühmten satirischen Zeitschrift vom bayerischen Staat übern…ommen hatte, brachte im Oktober 1954 Heft 1 des neuen Simplicissimus heraus, samt Th.Th. Heines roter Bulldogge auf dem Einband. --- Es handelt sich um Entwürfe zu einem unveröffentlichten 3-teiligen Roman, teils in Form von Erzählungen und Essays, die darin einfließen sollten. --- Ein Kapitel mit eigenhändiger Titelzeichnung: "Das Blockhaus. Ein Vorwort von Olaf Iversen." --- Anfangs einige abgeschlossene Kapitel, danach folgen viele Konzepte, auch bloße Gedanken, Kapiteleinteilungen etc., oft auf kleinen losen Zetteln. --- Am Anfang 22 nummerierte Seiten, die in sich vollständig sind. --- Beginnend: "Ich bin Hauptmann Michael Kornback. Am schmalen Fuss des Berges, der gleich einer erstarrten Woge aus dem düsteren See aufsteigt, liegt das Blockhaus, in dem ich mich verborgen halte. Nicht vor den Fremden, nein, vor den Deutschen verberge ich mich. In meiner Tischlade liegen die silbernen Dingen. Ich trug sie einmal auf der Brust, denn ich kam aus dreiunddreißig Nahkämpfen mit dem Leben davon." --- Am Ende datiert Altlach-Hütte, Winter 1945/46. -- Dies ist wohl Teil des Romans, d.h. wohl, dass der Protagonist sich in den Bergen versteckt, weil er nicht weiß, dass der 2. Weltkrieg vorbei ist? --- Ein anderer Titel lautet "Unter goldenen Wolken"; Auszug: "Oft sitze ich hier auf einem Stein und finde, indem ich die Einbildung zurückschrecke, in dem verzerrten Geäst immer neue sonderbare Gestalten, wütende Schlangen, verkümmerte Seepferdchen, kämpfende Gespenster, ein Alraunmännlein, einmal sogar Melusine, die ich mit ins Blockhaus nehme, und als Lüster [.] an der Decke aufhänge [.]." --- Einige Konzepte mit dem Titel "Über die Einsamkeit." --- Vorhanden sind auch zwei Blöcke (rückseitig beschriebene Lieferscheine der Münchner Maschinenbau-Firma Hermann Garling) mit Roman-Konzepten; in einem hat Olaf Iversen auf sechs Seiten Skizzen / Karikaturen gezeichnet. Es gibt auch wenige weitere Zeichnungen. --- Auch Rückseiten von Blättern aus einem Briefmarken-Katalog wurden verwendet, teils auch Kalenderblätter. --- Auf einem Zettel ein Gedicht mit Widmung "Immer ewig Dein O.I." --- Einliegend in drei Mappen; betitelt: "Roman" // "Roman. Entwürfe und Notizen" // "Ideen und Pläne." --- Beiliegend Blatt aus der "Süddeutschen Zeitung" vom 29./30.
