Édition illustrée, en tirage de tête avec une aquarelle originale. Un des 20 exemplaires de tête sur grand Japon ou grand vélin d'Arches (ici Arches), contenant trois états des eaux-fortes et une importante aquarelle inédite au faux-titre, signée J.-F. Raffaëlli (1850-1924). Publié initialement en 1879, Les Sœurs Vatard constitue l'un des premiers romans naturalistes de Joris-Karl Huysmans et l'un des témoignages les plus précis de la vie ouvrière parisienne sous la Troisième République. Avant les œuvres décadentes qui feront sa célébrité (À rebours, Là-bas), Huysmans décrit ici avec une rigueur quasi documentaire l'existence âpre de deux jeunes relieuses, inscrivant le roman dans la lignée directe de Zola, tout en affirmant déjà une sensibilité singulière au détail, aux atmosphères et aux marges sociales. Infime frottement sur le mors supérieur du premier plat ainsi que sur sur un nerf du dos, autrement exemplaire superbe ; quelques accrocs à l'étui. De la bibliothèque de Lucien Gougy (III, 1934, n°361), puis Marcel Lecomte (1900-1966) ; son ex-libris. Puis de l'ancien président du Conseil européen Robert Schuman (1886-1963) ; son ex-dono "r.s.".
