95 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.25cm. Original dark cloth mottled and stained, color fading to spine cloth with slight fraying at ends, front board's gilt stamped lettering remains fairly bright. Edges toned; varied toning/foxing and some soiling to interior pages; ink ownership inscriptions for Jno. Y. Kilpatrick dated for 1887 on front endpapers and rear pastedown; front pastedown ownership inscription notes that the book was a gift from U.S. Commissioner of Education N.H.R. Dawson (Nathaniel H. R. Dawson). Book's b/w plates (some of which are foldouts) are all present but with only tissue guard sheet stubs remaining if at all. Two foldout color maps at rear: first map carelessly re-folded at some point resulting in strong non-original fold-lines; second map has worn fore-edge as it extends past both boards' fore-edges. Color paleontological chart with large loss to its top right corner laid-in at front endpapers; chart is not original to the book but kept laid-in as found. Binding is still firm. A good copy. The aforementioned ink ownership inscriptions are those of Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama attorney John Young Kilpatrick (1835-1917) who served as a Captain in a Confederate Army cavalry regiment under Colonel William Wirt Adams and was elected to the state legislature among other accomplishments.
