    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 162 pages with diagrams, plates and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") in original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Includes dedication tipped in. (Betts: 33-74). First edition. Includes 15 games annotated by literary quotations, a collection of 42 problems composed by the author, also accompanied by quotations, and various articles, including one on stalemate by master play. Jacob Schumer was born in 1869 in Kamionka Strumilowa, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Kamianka-Buzka, Ukraine). He was educated in Vienna as a Doctor of Medicine (1894), after which he married in Birmingham to Matilda Josephine Myers (1876-1971), resided in Vöslau, Austria (1900), London (1902), and Johannesburg, South Africa (about 1903-1907) before settling in Hendon, Middlesex (1911-1932). He was a well-known chess problem composer, and also a strong player, winning the Mocatta Cup (1911) and sharing 5th place in the British Chess Championship in Chester (1914). For a period he was the chess editor of The Westminster Gazette, and chess correspondent for London's News Chronicle. His book Chesslets appeared in 1928. Condition: Some bumping to edges else a very good copy.
