Softcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "To Jack Morehead, Protector of the National Parks and friend of wildlife and natural resources, who cares for the planet and its people, from Robert Cahn." Uncommon signed.John "Jack" Morehead was the chief ranger and then superintendent of Yosemite National Park, and later became the Assistant Director for Operations for the Department of the Interior (see this nice resolution singing his praises). Cahn was a prominent environmental journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for a 16-part series titled "Will Success Spoil the National Parks?" and later collaborated with NPS director Horace Albright to produce Albright's book The Birth of National Park Service. Cahn'spapers are held in the NPS History Collection. This book, Footprints on the Planet, was his first and "chronicles the continuing struggle between public need and private gain and investigates attitudes toward the environment in business, industry, and government." A couple pages of "suggested reading" at back are also quite interesting, useful. With a short intro by Jacques Cousteau and blurbs by William O. Douglas among others. A very good, tight paperback with edgewear, rubbing, and a crease down the spine. Some toning to pages and browning to lower page edges. A wonderful inscription.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Third printing. Signed by Jean-Michel Cousteau, the son of Jacques Cousteau and for 20 years the executive vice president of the Cousteau Society, on the title page. Signature is vertical (rotated) on the page. Also inscribed in bold Sharpie on the title page by, it would appear, the co-author of the book, Philippe Diole: "5/17/81, To Hobye and Debbi Rogers, Philippe." That signature is somewhat difficult to decipher, and we can't find any other examples of Diole's signature. Laid in is a handsome invitation in baby blue to the Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Rogers from the Brielle Galleries in New Jersey to a 1981 reception to benefit in the Cousteau Society (where the book was signed). Jean-Michel made an appearance. The gallery was introducing the limited edition Cybis Humpback Whale in Porcelain, a figurine, which Jean-Michel advised the creation of. A portion of the proceeds (retail $1750 in 1981) were to benefit the Cousteau Society. Also included is a small pamphlet about the Cybis sculpture (which probably accompanied the sculpture), and several newspaper clippings about the event. The book is near fine with faint foxing to top face of text block and the publisher's purple spackle to bottom face; in a near fine jacket with light edge wear and one wrinkle on front panel. The invitation is very near fine with minor handling.
