This book feels solid to the touch. It does stand apart from most books that I touch. Very well put together in 1934. [If you buy this book, you will see what I mean]. Clean and tightly bound to the inner page block. The condition inside this book is really good. The pages are clean throughout. 364 pages plus an epilogue to the end of the story, which takes you to page 375. The epilogue ends with a poem: [after Willie has returned from war] "Oh! Willie, is it you dear, Safe, safe at home? They did not tell me true, dear: They said you would not come. This copy is signed on the half title by U-Boat Commander Ernst Schmidt and Hans Goebeler (Crew member of U-505). Hans Goebeler was a crew member of the German submarine U-505. He was aboard the U-505 when it was captured by the U.S. Navy in 1944, the first enemy vessel captured at sea since the War of 1812. Goebeler later moved to the Chicago area and became a tour guide for the U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry. Signed.

Ballnächte. Tuggener betont auf diesem Bild das theatralische Moment eines solchen Anlasses. Interessant dabei: die kleine Figur links, die den Rock hält, hat nicht denselben Status wie die Hauptfiguren. Im Gegensatz zu diesen, die in etwas morbiden Farben gemalt sind, leuchtet sie in einem lebendigen Rot. Eine feine politische Andeutung des Künstlers? (S. M.
