Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Sky Was Always Blue by Admiral Sir William James CGB Published by Methuen & Co 1951- 271 Pages - 23 Illustrations / Indexed Admiral Sir William Milbourne James, GCB (22 December 1881 - 17 August 1973) was a British naval commander, politician and author. He served in the Royal Navy from the early 20th century to the Second World War. Following early service on the training ship HMS Britannia, he achieved the rank of commander in 1913. During the First World War he assisted William Reginald Hall, the Director of Naval Intelligence, eventually becoming deputy director. Hall and James worked together in "Room 40" which decrypted a number of crucial enemy signals relating to the Battle of Jutland, the plans of Roger Casement and the Zimmermann Telegram. At one point James ran Room 40 on Hall's behalf. James related some of the events in his biography of Hall, published in 1955. In the inter-war years, James was Deputy Director at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and Director in 1925. He went on to be Naval Assistant to the First Sea Lord in 1927, and Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, in 1930. From 1935 to 1938 he was Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff and a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty. From 1938 James was a full admiral. During the Second World War, James served as Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth, from 1939. In 1940 he commanded Operation Aerial, the evacuation of British troops from Brittany and Normandy, a parallel operation to the Dunkirk evacuation. In this book, Admiral James recalls his fifty years' of naval service, which covered that remarkable period when the tranquil steam-cum-sail Navy was transformed into the great, dynamic fleets of Dreadnought battleships, destroyers, submarines, and aircraft carriers that fought in two world war. The gunner efficiency of the ship in which he was gunnery lieutenant attracted world-wide attention and had a profound effect on future battle training; as a Commander he was instrumental in introducing many reforms to improve the sailor's life afloat. He held a variety of appointments as Captain and Admiral that brought him in touch with men and affairs beyond the normal environment of a naval officer. He was in charge of Secret Intelligence at the Admiralty for two years of the 1914-1918 war; Director of the Naval Staff College; Chief of Staff of the Home, Mediterranean and China fleets; in command of the Baltic cruiser Squadron; and Deputy Chief of Staff during the three uneasy years prior to 1939. This book reflects throughout his numerous enthusiasms, and the happiness he found in his professional work. Condition: 1951 Methuen & Co 1st Edition Hardback Book. Very Good Condition some bumping head & tail to the spine minor chip to the top of the spine, minor bumping / rubbing to the corners of the boards. Binding tight, pages are all clean and bright.
