Paperback. Condition: Good. A Virginia man's fight against poverty, disease, and discrimination forms the background of Fight On, My Soul. Set largely in rural Lancaster County, Virginia, Fight On, My Soul tells the story of Morgan E. Norris, one of Virginia's first black physicians, who believed in himself enough to overcome the daily struggles of his life and his time. Told by his son, this meticulously researched biography is a moving story that captures Norris's struggle to provide better conditions for his family and beloved patients. James Norris says of his father: When barriers were raised and obstacles thrown, his modus operandi would be first to try to wend his way around them, and failing that, to blast them down Norris's life spanned the contentious period from post-Reconstruction to the relentless erosion of civil liberties for blacks, the encoding of segregation into law, and finally the collapse of Jim Crow. Norris died in 1966, just about the same time as Jim Crow, but when he died it was still illegal for a white to marry a Negro in Virginia, and the American Medical Association had yet to disavow local and state societies that discriminated against Negro physicians. Norris could have chosen to go with the flow, to move north to less conflicted environs, or even pass for white. But for Norris, none of these choices fit. He chose first to become educated and then to return to his boyhood home in remote Virginia. In doing so, he fulfilled a pledge he had made to his dying father: to become a doctor and make sure no one in his little insular community would suffer as his father had. In telling his father's narrative, James Norris illuminates the delicate balance between defiance of systemic racial practices and working within a system that stubbornly resisted change.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. One of the most frequently taught slave narratives, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglassis assigned in many courses, including American and African American literature, African American studies, women's studies, and even composition. Regularly excerpted in introductory American literature and composition anthologies, Douglass's classic first-person account is ideal for exploring the artistic accomplishment of the slave narrator. In this Approaches to Teaching World Literature volume, sixteen essays on teaching the work testify to the complexity of such accounts and their possibilities in the classroom. Like other books in the MLA's Approaches series, this one is divided into two parts. The first part, "Materials," discusses the reference works, historical and critical studies, and other materials most commonly used and recommended by teachers of Douglass's work. In the second part, "Approaches," a diverse group of scholars describe methods of presentation that they have found effective for enlivening classroom discussion and enhancing students' appreciation of the text. Their essays outline the challenges posed by Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglassand the fundamental literary and historical debates surrounding the narrator's account. They also evaluate problems of cultural authority and historical record, provide examples of teaching the text alongside other slave narratives, and suggest ways to incorporate it into introductory courses such as humanities and world literature.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Edinburgh, 1826: Corpses begin to turn up in Hangman's Wynd, one of the many dank alleyways that coil through the city's Old Town. Initially, the deaths are attributed to cholera morbus, an intestinal ailment rife among the residents of the Old Town's squalid tenements. But to David Arnesen, a professor at the city's medical school, it seems beyond chance that the victims are all prostitutes and that they die of the same symptoms in the same out-of-the-way location. Using the tools of the new science of forensic medicine to pursue answers to these questions, he is led to a startling discovery.and nearly becomes another of the killer's victims. …

Condition: Good. "You have to react instinctively. In this game there's no second place, only the quick and the dead." In Vietnam, Mobile Guerrilla Force conducted unconventional operations against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Armed with silencer-equipped MK-II British Sten guns, M-16s, M-79s, and M-60 machine guns, the men of the Mobile Guerrilla Force operated in the steamy, triple-canopy jungle owned by the NVA and VC, destroying base camps, ambushing patrols, and gathering the intelligence that General Westmoreland desperately needed. In 1967, James Donahue was a Special Forces medic and assistant platoon leader assigned to the Mobile Guerrilla Force and their fiercely anti-Communist Cambodian freedom fighters. Their mission: to locate the 271st Main Force Viet Cong Regiment so they could be engaged and destroyed by the 1st Infantry Division. Now, with the brutal, unflinching honesty only an eye witness could possess, Donahue relives the adrenaline rush of firefights, air strikes, human wave attacks, ambushes, and attacks on enemy base camps. Following the operation the surviving Special Forces members of the Mobile Guerrilla Force were decorated by Major General John Hay, Commanding General, 1st Infantry Division. …
