See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Thirty-five lines of neatly-written text. Signed 'James Martineau' and addressed to 'Mr F. Parnall'. He congratulates him 'on obtaining a place in the Honours Division', explaining that it will 'remain entirely with' himself 'to select the optional books for the October Examination'. They 'have no wish to modify any choice which you may make, in accordance with the terms of the Regulations'. He explains that the examination will probably be conducted by his colleagues, 'as my duties do not commence till a little after the opening of the Session'. 'Dr Drummond' - i.e. the theologian James Drummond (1835-1918), for whom see the Oxford DNB - will be acting for Martineau, 'And it will be as well for you, - a week or ten days before the time, - to write to him your final selection of books, and asking him about any matters on which you may be in doubt.' He continues with information about the 'further examination' and in a postscript gives Drummond's address in Hampstead.

Signed twice by both parties, and initialled by them on a couple of occasions. Following the defeat of Napoleon, the broken state of the French economy allowed many wealthy Britains to live there. Drummond is described as 'Mr. Jacques Drummond Ecossais Logé ce jour à Paris, Rue St. Honoré No., hôtel Meurice'. The body of the document leases the 'Chateau de Courbeton, Parc, Jardin et Dépendances, Le tout Situé prez Montereau, department de Seine et Marne' for one year. With codicil extending the lease to 1 November 1824. Lachlan Macquarie records in his journal visits to the Drummonds at Courbeton in 1822 and 1823.

Bound in a half morocco binding with cloth boards, bound by Andrew Grieve, Edinburgh. A finely preserved collection of four scarce limited editions of these antiquarian works by James Drummond, R.S.A. (18161877), bound as one. Drummond was a Scottish artist, antiquary, and curator of the National Gallery of Scotland, renowned for his meticulous studies of Scottish history and arms. Each work is a limited edition, privately printed in very small numbers, three of which are signed by John Ritchie Findlay, Esq, a noted philanthropist and proprietor of The Scotsman newspaper, with one copy inscribed to John Ritchie Findlay, Esq. from the author. The Bluidy Banner of Drumclog and Bothwell Brig (1861). One of only forty copies printed; five illustrations in colour across three plates. Collated, complete. Highland Targets and Other Shields (1873). Copy number twenty three of fifty printed for private circulation; illustrated with seven plates. Collated, complete. Medieval Triumphs and Processions (1874). A limited large-paper copy being number three of fifty, with additional illustrations. Illustrated with five plates. Collated, complete. The Portraits of John Knox and George Buchanan (1875). A limited large-paper copy being number ten of fifty, with additional portraits and notes.
