Much of the material originally appeared in The New Yorker, with additional pieces from Cosmopolitan, Holiday, and The Bermudian. The copyright page explicitly states "SECOND PRINTING." Bibliographical research adds a useful precision: the first printing was published October 26, 1953, in an impression of 34,714 copies, while the second printing followed in December 1953. The binding shown here - dusty-rose boards, natural linen spine, black script "thurber" on the front, and dark topstain - corresponds to the original American issue design. Near Fine condition. An unusually attractive jacketless copy. Binding remains square and firm; paper-covered boards are remarkably clean with strong original color, showing only very light shelf/edge wear and a small amount of corner wear. Natural linen spine is clean and sound with crisp black titling and decorative rules. The dark topstain remains strong, with scattered pale spotting/rubbing visible. Interior is clean and unmarked, with only mild age toning; illustrations remain crisp. Hinges and endpapers are sound. No dust jacket. James Thurber (1894-1961) was one of the defining American humorists and cartoonists of the twentieth century and became closely identified with The New Yorker, where his prose and unmistakably spare drawings helped establish the magazine's particular style of sophisticated, absurdist humor. His best-known works include My Life and Hard Times, The Thurber Carnival, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The 13 Clocks.
