Toen jan Romein in 1956 zijn boek De eeuw van Azië publiceerde, was hij er nog van overtuigd dat dit deel van de wereld zich voorgoed aan de invloedssfeer van het Westen aan het onttrekken was. Inmiddels weten we dat hij zich vergiste. Wat is er ondertussen gebeurd? Waarom zijn de sociale en nationale bewegingen die in de eerste helft van deze eeuw overal tot bloei kwamen, binnen een halve eeuw doodgebloed, ontaard of onschadelijk gemaakt? Dat vraagt Jan Romeins leerling Jan Pluvier zich af in zijn Zuidoost-Azië Een eeuw van onvervulde verwachtingen. Het boek gaat in op de ineenstorting van de Nederlandse, Franse en Engelse macht in de regio. Hij beschrijft de politionele acties en de Nieuw Guinea-crisis, en de omstreden rol van de Amerikanen in landen als Vietnam.
