Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Signed by Author; Only slight wear. ; Signed and inscribed by author 'Mumford' on title page. ; Trade PB; 8.90 X 5.90 X 0.50 inches; 138 pages; "J. Gordon Mumford was born outside London and trained as a radio operator for the British Merchant Navy in 1942. He first went to sea in 1942 on a Danish collier which met an untimely end which we read about in occasional flashbacks. We first meet 17-year old Mumford on the SS SCOTTISH HEATHER which sailed in convoy ONS 154 from England bound for New York. The 'Black Pit' referred to by the title is what is also known as the 'Air Gap' -- the part of the North Atlantic beyond reach of Allied aircraft where German U-boats waited like hungry wolves for defenseless sheep. There is an unusual twist to the adventures that befall Mumford and his fellow SCOTTISH HEATHER crew after they are torpedoed. His next ship, the EMPIRE HARMONY spent 18 months in the Mediterannean shuttling from port to port -- wherever her heavy-lift cranes were needed to unload Sherman tanks or other heavy equipment. At times the ship is just behind the front lines, under heavy attack, at times the crew enjoys shore leave in friendly territory, and we experience a young man's impressions of the world. Unlike some memoirs whose authors hide their youthful feelings, Mumford is not afraid to talk about his confusion regarding sex when he is approached by the ever-present prostitutes, in view of his mother's admonition to 'save himself for marriage.' The EMPIRE PATH takes Mumford up the Scheldt River to Antwerp where they are under frequent attack by V2 rockets. ".

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This first edition signed book is in near fine condition. Minimal edge wear to covers. Signed by the author 'Pjhilip Donnelly' on half title page. Inscription byprevious owners on same page. Illustrated with black and white photographs and family trees. Canada is now their home. But why and how did they come to be there? Nancy was born in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in 1935. Philip s life began in the same year on a farm in County Cavan, Ireland. She was a healthy baby. He was not. They both grew up in Ireland she in the big city of Dublin, and he on a farm in the days before automobiles and electricity came to the mountain roads and back lanes of County Cavan. They were given the gift of a great life together for forty-two years, but Nancy died prematurely in 2001. The Eyes that Shone is Philip s souvenir of his life with Nancy, the legacy she left for her family and friends, and the joys and sorrows of the days, the months, and the years after she is gone. It is a happy story, but there are days when a tear must fall. Here, also, are some intimate reflections on life and culture in the rural parts of Ulster and in the urban society of Dublin in the 1940s. Philip s fond recollections of Public Works Canada from the time of Prime Ministers John Diefenbaker to Brian Mulroney will renew old memories for those who lived through those eventful years. An ordinary life will seldom grab the headlines. The threads connecting one day to the next may not stand out with an iridescent glow, but the final tapestry can be inspiring, even spectacular. It really is not very far from Canada to Ireland. Heavy book. Extra postage may apply.
