First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 209p. A hardcover book in very good condition with a like dustjacket. Faint circular stain on front of both book and jacket. Edges and endpapers foxed, but otherwise, text clean and binding tight. The jacket has worn and chipped edges, and the spine is faded. However, the jacket is still mostly intact. The scarce first printing! The author, a Southern-born college professor, was a distant relative of Wade Hampton. In this book, he argues that Wade Hampton's approach to post-Civil War politics offered a moderate alternative to the highly polarized and violent situation in South Carolina under Reconstruction. Jarrell's historiography is of the Lost Cause ilk, embracing the notion of white paternalism in the South.
