Map
14 1/4 x 11 1/8 inches. Foundation map for any Chicago Collection. This map of the harbor at Chicago freezes in time the status of the nascent shipping center at Chicago. The population of Chicago was 4,200 people at the time of publication. They were centered on the south and north sides of the Chicago River from Ft. Dearborn to the branching of the Chicago River. In Holland's book on Chicago maps, "In the 1839 report to the Chief of the Topographical Engineers, Cram noted that there were several inherent flaws in the design of the Chicago harbor; specifically , there were problems in the configuration of the piers that flanked the harbor's entrance Cram observed that the northern pier was oriented in a direction that practically ensured wind and wave action would deposit sand in the harbor entrance. He thought that the width between the piers was too narrow and also remarked that the southern pier was too long., since 'vessels on missing the entrance during the action of north winds , have been unable to turn around and come in without striking the extremely of the pier.' To remedy the situation Cram endorsed. a 405 foot extension of the northern pier in a sharp angle to the northeast." This is one of the earliest obtainable maps of Chicago and its inland. Very good to excellent condition having mild toning along the fold line. Virtually unobtrusive. See pic.
