Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. FRANCFORT, Chez Frederic Arnaud, M. DC. LXXXIV (1684). FIRST EDITION. Text in French. (The first English edition was published in 1685, under the title: The HISTORY of the ORIGINAL and PROGRESS of ECCLESIASTICAL REVENUES - Wherein is Handled According to the Laws, Both Ancient and Modern, Whatsoever Concerns Matters Beneficial, The Regale, Investitures, Nominations, And Other Rights Attributed to Princes. Written in French by a Learned Priest and now done into English.) Contemporary calf covered boards, five raised spine bands, leather spine title label, gilt designs on spine, edges stained speckled red, 3.5x6 inches. Pagination: [4], 346, [10] pages, including an Index. Publisher's woodcut device on the title-page plus two engraved initial letters. A pseudonymously published work on the history of Church Revenues and Finances. Simon, an accomplished Hebrew scholar, was later lauded by the New Catholic Encyclopedia as the "father of Biblical criticism". GOOD Condition: The covers' leather is rubbed, the front hinge is split but holding well with the cord binding, overall the covers remain sturdy and attractive; internally, there is a small old French bookseller's label (Victor Pineau / Libraire / Beauvais) and a handwritten number on the front pastedown, a previous owner's signature and an institutional blind-stamp on the title page, offsetting to the margins of the endpapers and early leaves, otherwise complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A nice, presentable copy. About RICHARD SIMON (from Wikipedia): "Richard Simon, b.1638 d.1712, was a French priest, a member of the Oratorians, an influential biblical critic, and orientalist and a controversialist.".
