N.d., circa 1919. 54 pp, with charming chromotypographic color illustrations throughout of animals primarily but also toys, children, fairy tale-like characters. The color is a little richer than average for French chromotypography of the period and genre. Boards have some minor wear and light soil darkening around edges. Perhaps a slight bend to boards. Otherwise clean and tight. A very good copy overall.

A fabulous abecedary with Lemaitre's amusing prose enhanced by the fantastic illustrations of JOB. A very nice example of this beautiful illustrated book. OCLC 21469822 AUTHOR: François Élie Jules Lemaître (1853 1914) was a French critic and dramatist. He became a professor at the University of Grenoble in 1883, but was already well known for his literary criticism, and in 1884 he resigned his position to devote his time to literature. Lemaître's sketches of modern authors show great insight and unexpected judgment as well as gaiety and originality of expression. He was admitted to the French Academy on 16 January 1896. In his later years, Lemaitre worked on this abecedary -- a collection of stories illustrating the letters of the alphabet. Some of the stories were original; others were adapted from tales by Anderson, Perrault, and others. Unfortunately, World War I intervened and the book was not published until 1919 after Lemaitre's death. ILLUSTRATOR: Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Bréville, known by the pen name JOB after his initials (1858 1931) was a French artist and illustrator. After military service, he joined the École des beaux-arts and exhibited at the 1886 'Salon des Artistes Français', receiving a mixed reception. His successful career was as an illustrator, contributing caricatures to La Caricature and to La Lune and is best known for his illustrations for children's books, such as this. He was a Sociétaire of the 'humoristes' and exhibited with the Incoherents. His studio has been reconstructed at the musée de Metz.

The book is in good condition with the minor exception of slight damage at the edges of the cover and one loose (full-page) illustration. 22,5 x 29 cm, 160 pp. The book contains 16 polychrome lithographs and several black and white prints throughout the text. l Jacques Pierre Bainville (1879-1936) was a popular French historian. He was praised for his accurate criticism on several political decisions concerning the First World War. In 1924 he wrote the Histoire de France, in which he gives a chronological overvi.

Heavy book is tight, square, sharp-cornered and free of major flaws or markings inside and out, with gray endpapers - other than cloth of spine cloth being mostly torn away, and a bit of looseness to binding. 1921 edition with 36 full-page color illustrations, including 4 double-page spreads, by JOB. Thirty-six watercolors, each a painting in itself, by Jacques-Marie Gaston Onfroy de Breville, known as JOB, with astonishing attention to detail and color the meteoric rise of Bonaparte up to his coronation in 1804.

Onfray de Breville, Jacques-Marie Gaston); printing by Ruckert et Godde; "paper des papeteries du Pont-de-Cclaix"; 4to, book size: 9-1/2 x 12-1/2in; illustrations are of dolls enacting major moments of French history from the barbarian Gauls to Napoleon, full page (9-1/2x12-1/2in) illustrations are opposite the text pages in French (all the pages are individually hinged into book by the publisher); elaborate and colorful example of one of Job's less common and more fanciful titles; French text by G.Montorgueil; the book is tight, the spine has been replaced with a new deep blue cloth that matches the boards and gold lettering; rubbing and nicks to the original color pictorial boards; new endpapers; inteior pages have some rubbing and the first several pages have some small tears to edges; text pages are also browning & tears to edges but still attached and there are some previous tap marks at bottom of the text pages right inside where the pages are attached to spine; but overall the plates still have their brilliant coloring and in GOOD COND.

Half Morocco, Marbled Boards. Condition: Good. Folio, 14 by 11.5 inches, 36 by 30 cm. N.d., circa 1900. Rebacked, with the original morocco spine mounted onto skiver. The skiver, though, being a different shade of red, is conspicuous along the entire front joint, and at the lower end in particular, the reattachment looks clumsy. The leather of the spine has heavily rubbed, with dry chipping at the extremities. The leaves within are heavily age toned and a bit brittle, with some marginal chipping. A few tape repairs. The leaves of the three volumes are not exactly even, and so this comes off similar to many a sammelbund. Still, excellent value for two antique French juvenile classics.
