MENCKEN: A MEMOIR BY ALFRED A. KNOPF. // From Charles A. Fecher's essay: "Converting me to anything is probably a psychological impossibility. At all events, it has never been achieved by anyone. . . I can't recall ever changing my mind about any capital matter. My general body of fundamental ideas is the same today as it was in the days when I first began to ponder." (MENCKEN). This lifelong immutability of his thought was remarked on by many people besides himself. To a friend and colleague like Hamilton Owens, it signified that Mencken had been able to avoid the painful intellectual experience to most of us, of being forced to discard one set of beliefs because they had proved false or inadequate and then grope about for a new set to take their place. To critics or outright enemies, it constituted proof positive that he was narrow-minded and prejudiced, closed to any point of view that did not happen to coincide with his own, and had never gone through the normal processes of maturing (p. 114f) . . . From his high regard for scientific achievement his skeptical attitude naturally follows. His opinions on religion lead directly to what might be called, if in his case it did not sound so dreadfully formal, his "philosophy of man." His view of human nature is the foundation for his contemptuous dismissal of democracy, and for all his beliefs about government and politics. And so it goes. (p. 116). // Brown cloth with bright (diminished from brilliant) gilt lettering on spine; decorative design (4" x 1") down right front cover edge on top half front cover; deckled fore-edge. Tan dustwrapper not price-clipped ($15.00) with tinted black and white photo-portrait of Mencken a center front cover; large Title lettering across top front cover above photo-portrait; Contributors' names and Editor name lettering below photo-portrait. Dustwrapper spine age-toned (with corresponding slightly diminished brown of book spine); wear across spine ends and tiny bits missing at spine and cover corners with 1/4" and 5/8" tears at top spine corners (NOW sins backed with Archival tape); slight offsetting on endpapers; two fingertip food stains on p. 25 and at center rear cover (these appear slightly on inside rear cover but NO staining onto brown cloth book cover itself), and similar micro-stain (1/8", ostensibly by a same finger causing above-noted stains, but nearly undetectable on beveled edge) on page edge of beveled fore-edge (p. 37/38); small red Publisher's remainder mark (logo) on lower edge near spine: describes worse than it is, but there you have it in uncompromising truth. Book itself essentially Near Fine: Strong binding (NO cracks); NO rubbing wear (dustwrapper did its job); NO previous owner names; NO writing in text. Dustwrapper in Brodart mylar.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition navy blue linen boards with gold front cover publisher insignia and gold spine lettering. Includes Publisher's Preface, Christmas 1961; Historical Introduction by Richard Harwell, Brunswick, Maine, August 19, 1961; A Bibliographical Note; Epilogue; Index and List of Other Publications by The Lakeside Classics. Also includes gilt upper page edges and the pages are sewn into the binding (not glued). Illustrated with black-and-white drawings and black-and-white portrait frontispiece of General J.E.B. Stuart with a fine tissue-guard overlay. "John Esten Cooke lived and fought among the heroes of the Army of Northern Virginia's grandest adventures. He was that army's most thorough and most romantic reporter, as well as J.E.B. Stuart's ordnance officer. It has often been said - and truly said - that the Amrican Civil War was the last romantic war and the first modern war. It was its romance that Cooke emphasized in his dispatches to Richmond's The Southern Illustrated News and in his postwar novels about the great sectional conflict. Though Cooke asserted again and again a distaste for war, he was incurably romantic; and it is the romance and adventure of Confederate army life that shine through his pages. His career as a soldier was largely with Stuart's dashing cavalry, and the author saw in his leader a new Rupert and in his companions a new breed of knightly cavaliers." - short excerpt from the Preliminary Page entitled: Historical Introduction. "Outlines From The Outpost is neither a reprint of a previously published book nor the publication of a previously unprinted manuscript. It is, as nearly as can new be achieved, however, the book that John Esten Cooke was preparing for publication during the Civil War but which was never published. Cooke described that book in the entry in his diary for March 20, 1863, and added additional information about it in his entries for March 29, March 30, and April 3. At the end of an itemization of his winter's writing to that date, Cooke noted on March 20: "Mr. Ayres [of Ayres & Wade] proposes to make a volume as soon as there is MS enough, and about 700 pages will do. My contract with him is $10 a column - about 6 pages - with the copyright reserved to myself, but he to have the 'refusal of it.' If necessary he is to copyright the sketches in his paper, in his own name, giving me a paper stating that the property remains in me." On March 29 he recorded the writing since his earlier entry of six additional sketches. "This makes about 500 pp written," he noted. It will be a book soon." But the sketches did not become a book during the war. They were reworked after the fall of the Confederacy and provided the basis for many of the chapters in Wearing of the Gray. Usually, however, the version in the postwar book is considerably different from the sketch as first published. No editorial liberties have been taken with the sketches in republishing them. The editorial work on them has been kept to a minimum -the insertion in brackets of the correct version of proper names misspelled by Cooke, the correction of errors obviously typographical, and making as consistent as possible the variant spellings apparently introduced by different typesetters and editors." - short excerpt from the Preliminary Page entitled: A Bibliographical Note.
Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. In-8, reliure pleine toile de l'éditeur, XXX-672 pp. America's Greatest Contribution to Political Philosophy By Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, Reproduced from the Original Texts. Edited, with introduction and Notes By Jacob E. Cooke. Marie-France Toinet, art. in Universalis. Reliure et intérieur en très bon état. Très bon exemplaire.(ThHome28) Size: 17 x 23,5.
