Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). One of only a few hardcovers for sale on the Internet. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. It is signed and inscribed by the co-author John B. Donovan. The inscription reads simply 'To Bill Kelly, John B. Donovan.' The book is in very good condition. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on the front and on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in very good shape, no rubbing. There are a couple of small light spots on both the front and rear cover. There's also a little bit of crinkling off the top and bottom edges of the front and rear side of the spine, and a tiny crease under the top corner of the rear cover. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean and bright. Scrolling through, I haven't found any soiling. The white inside covers and end papers are also very clean. The pages are in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no writing, other than the signed inscription. There are a good number of black and white photographs. They are all in excellent condition. The dust jacket is in solid shape. It is very clean. It has the same crinkling off the top and bottom edges just adjacent to the spine. There is also one tiny tear off the front top edge and one tiny tear off the rear top edge. The flaps are very clean. The jacket will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'After the Bay Of Pigs details for the first time the efforts of the Cuban Families Committee, her Coordinator, Berta Barreto de los Heros, and famed negotiator James B. Donovan, over a 20-month period to negotiate the release of the POWs of the 1961 exiled invasion of Cuba. It chronicles the roller-coaster negotiations and the delicate political relationships prevalent in the early years of Castro's regime and towards the end of JFK's presidency. It is the story not only of the heroic effort that resulted in the dramatic release of 1,113 prisoners on Christmas Even 1962, following the first delivery of the agreed- upon $53 million in food, medicine, and surgical equipment, negotiated for their release, but also details how Donovan and Berta were able to negotiate the exit of another group of 7,677 Cuban citizens aboard the very same ships and planes chartered by the American Red Cross to deliver their cargo to Havana. Readers will understand the tense political context that met Donovan (famous for negotiating the release in the early months of 1962 of Francis Gary Powers whose U-2 spy plane was shot down by the USSR) after being recommended to the prisoner's families by then-Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy to dive into the negotiations on behalf of the Cuban Families Committee.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

[WASHINGTON]. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" in beige printed wrappers with title printed in blue and red. Punch-sewn at gutter margin and tied with blue silk braid. [40] leaves on thick beige paper stock offering 36 sepia-toned 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" photographs, one picture affixed to each leaf. Woodcut borders and with printed captions at bottom of each page. Signed by Donovan to Ed Ballinger, manager at Withrow lumber yard. First edition of this uncommon souvenir album published by Donovan of the logging and lumber company operations, employees, and locales under the Columbia Valley Lumber Co., a subsidiary of the Bloedel Donovan Lumber Mills. Founded originally in 1898 as the Whatcom Logging Company by Julius Bloedel, John Joseph Donovan and Peter Larson, the firm would become later known as the Bloedel-Donovan Lumber Mills. In September, 1922, the Loedel, Prentice Bloedel, W.C. Miller and Donovan made an automobile excursion to the Columbia Valley Yards East and West of the Cascade Mountains, during which Donovan took photos of their stops. The photos include street scenes of Wenatchee, Waterville, the Great Northern RR shops in Wenatchee, company advertising signs, including an image of Ed Ballinger in front of the company signage and building in Withrow, and warehouses in Omak. A photo of a letter sent to H.J. McMahon of Tonasket dated Sept. 28th, 1922 details the perils of automobile travel at the time, with Donovan writing, "We were very sorry on our recent trip that road conditions between Mansfield and Bridgeport delayed us and compelled us to defer our visit to your city." Donovan (1858-1937) was not only a driving force of founding the city of Bellingham from Bellingham, Whatcom, & Fairhaven, but also was an enthusiastic advocate of the "Good Roads Movement," and encouraged the building of trunk highways. Columbia Valley Lumber Co. operated until 1945, and the lumber yards and operations were finally taken over by Weyerhaeuser in 1999. Light soiling and with light wear to the extremities. Very good.
