John Evelyn (1620 - 1706) was a noted English diarist and horticulturalist. An accomplished scholar with wide-ranging interests, John Evelyn was an influential figure in an age of particular cultural and scientific progress. These memoirs and letters give a fascinating portrait of life amongst seventeenth century intellectuals and amongst the courts of Charles I and II. Condition: In full blind cloth bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the heads and tails of spine. Hinges to volumes I-III are slightly strained but firm. Bothhinges tender to volume iv. Prior owner's notations to the front pastedown and bookplate to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are age tonedwith spotting to the endpapers andinstances oflight spots throughout. Some edges remain uncut. Overall: GOOD. Bindings very good, all remain strong, with a light general wear and rubbing to edges, discreet repair to the head of vol I. Contents clean and tight; original pale yellow end papers, all original adverts present, light browning/ foxing to tissue guards, plates a little toned and very slightly foxed, otherwise pages very clean.
