Seller: Epilonian Books, Manhattan Beach, CA, U.S.A.
unknown_binding. Condition: Acceptable. Senate, 41st Congress, 1st Session, Misc. Doc. No. 14., March 22, 1869. 6 page pamphlet. In acceptable condition. Pages are chipped and torn along edges of spine. Somehow they are still attached as one 6 page document, although with a small tug, the pages would probably pull apart easily. Paper is aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NOT a microfiche copy, but an actual printing of the documents. This is a series of letters presented to the United States Senate in connection with the territorial dispute between the United States and Great Britain over The San Juan Islands, located between Vancouver Island and the mainland of Washington State. This conflict, known as the Pig War (1859), was a boundary dispute that was eventually resolved through arbitration by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany in 1872, who ruled in favor of the United States. The documents contain a letter from J. Gregory Smith, President of Northern Pacific Railroad, introducing two additonal letters, the first from George Gibbs, an expert on Pacific Northwest geography and Native American cultures, and the second from G. Clinton Gardner, discussing legal, political, and logistical aspects of the San Juan Islands dispute. These documents offer a glimpse into the complexity of 19th-century American diplomacy, infrastructure development, and territorial expansion, illustrating the interconnectedness of these elements in shaping the nation's history.
