Stamp of the Radiation Laboratory, San Francisco Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, California on front. Manuscript dated March 15, 1947. Document Declassified on May 28, 1947. This was published for use within the Atomic Energy Commission. ResearchGate indicates that H. M. Patt had a long career at Argonne and was publishing into the early 2000's. It was the purpose of this investigation to determine possible changes in adrenal weight and adrenal cholesterol content at frequent intervals following total boxy X-radiation at three selected doses, sublethal, DL 50 and LD 100. It was hoped in this way to follow any alteration to adrenal activity during the entire course of radiation sickness and to provide thereby a possible basis for interpreting some of the observed physiological changes. A summary of all data is presented in Tables 1, 2 and 3. A significant reduction in adrenal cholesterol was obtained at 3 to 6 hours after exposure to either 650 r or 900 r whereas only a slight decrease was noted at 200 r. Animals dying after 650 r showed a greatly decreased adrenal cholesterol. Adrenal weight was elevated significantly 2 days after X-radiation with either 650 r or 900 r. A decreased in weight of the spleen was seen at all dose levels. The described changes my reflect an altered adrenal cortical activity. 250 white male rats (Maguran) were irradiated.
