When he died in 1960, the great Arabian traveller, scholar and writer, H. St. John Philby, left an unpublished manuscript charting his explorations of the story's development. As the author examines the successive versions of the story with their variants and accretions, we see how this mixture of fable and history, magic and myth has never ceased to stimulate the imaginations of story~tellers and those who are their listeners or readers.
