FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. 9 x 7 inches. [viii] + 20 leaves. Text printed alternately on verso and recto of leaves 1-20, which are opposite each other. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. Deckled edges. Patterned endpapers. Some wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by facsimile title page of 1823 edition with engraved frontispiece and 20 wood engravings. Kate Greenaway contributed the woodcuts of the additional verses, 3, 4, 8 and 9, written by Ruskin, the 1823 originals are attributed to R. Stennett and reproduced here in black and white facsimile (from the colour of the first publication)) by W. H. Hooper. Decorated by title page vignette. John Ruskin's new edition of the 1823 original with verses attributed to Mrs Pearson and Richard Scrafton Sharpe. Ruskin has contributed the preface and four additional verses which have new wood engravings by the well known Victorian children's writer and illustrator, the artist, Kate Greenaway (1846-1901).
