What results is a poignant and moving portrait of boyhood in rural America." Signed by Author.

Learned ecclesiastic (1721-1807), who opposed Hume and edited Clarendon. One page, quarto. Good, though on discoloured paper and heavily creased with a few small holes (not affecting text) caused by wear. Second leaf of bifoliate, damaged, discoloured and with some loss through breaking of wafer; bears address ('To / Major Gener…al Rooke | Member of Parliament | Woodstock | Oxfordshire') and postmark 'WINDSOR'. As Douglas was travelling to Salisbury, Rooke's covering letter did not arrive with 'Dr. Mavor's Present' (William Fordyce Mavor, 1758-1837, cleric and educationalist; the present may be the second edition of his 'Universal stenography', published in 1792). 'I had read the Performance soon after it appeared, & liked it much, both as to the Matter, & the Stile. That you have a Neighbour of such distinguished Abilities, cannot but be a valuable Acquisition to your circle of Acquaintances at Woodstock.' Signed 'J. Sarum'.

Pamphlet. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. Probably first edition. Octavo, 7 3/4" x 5." Pamphlet removed from a book. Original stitching nicely intact. Traces of leather on spine. Neatly trimmed edges. pp. [4], 55, [1]. Period ink inscriptions to top of half-title - long division problems figuring out how many souls wer…e condemned vs. how many were saved. Present day notes lightly written in pencil on half-title. Paper wrinkled near stitching of half-title. Very slight wrinkling along fore-edge and inner edge of last leaf. The upper corner of pp. 8 has been folded prior to trimming. Remarkably clean copy with little to no foxing; sharp, clear print on lightly tanned pages. (ESTC T201671) According to ESTC this edition is distinguished by: p. [56] unnumbered and blank; p. 11 signed with double dagger; p. 16 with catchword "And" Other editions with different publishers appear in Sabin, 20684; Evans 8585; and Howes L276. The second edition (1760) shows a line of erratum after the concluding "Finis", not present here. The Bishop of Salisbury, John Douglas (1721-1807) was a well-known Scottish writer and Anglican bishop. Douglas penned this letter to politicians William Pitt and the Duke of Newcastle (the "Two Great Men") at the behest of his patron, Lord Bath. In the pamphlet, Douglas predicts British victory in the Seven Years War and urges the statesmen to negotiate a favorable treaty with the terms that Quebec, Nova Scotia, Louisburg, and Cape Breton Islands become British territory. (Oxford DNB) (Wikipedia) This work is sometimes mistakenly attributed to William Pulteney, Earl of Bath.
