Book has some light wear to spine ends. DJ is price clipped, tape residue on inside of dj over closed tears, has large chip at spine bottom (eliminating all…but 'M' in Macmillan), smaller chip at top of spine and upper front gutter, closed tear bottom of front panel, smaller closed tear on rear panel, chips on corners, rubbing and wear on spine, corner folds and edges. Admirable poems by England's Poet Laureate in appreciation of all the unsung heroes on the home front during WWII, with many beautiful b& w drawings by Seago (their third such collaboration). A,much nicer book than the description of the dust jacket would indicate.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, 2" closed tear to top jacket, remains of old sticky lbel to bottom jacket, remains of old label to ffep, corners bruised, folds rubbed, not price clippe…d (£5.95), internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 250pp. Johannes Eppler (1914-99), also known as Hans Eppler, John Eppler, and Hussein Gaafer, was a World War II Abwehr spy, a German who had been raised in Egypt by his Egyptian stepfather. One of Rommel's spies during the North African campaign in World War II, Operation Salaam led by Laszlo Almasy spirited Eppler and Hans Gerd Sandstede into Cairo although they were both arrested soon after arrival in July 1942. Eppler is the subject of MI5 file KV 2/1467. After World War II, Eppler told dramatic stories and published books about his spy exploits during the war, but historians have shown that his actual work was ineffective and amateurish. Eppler and a colleague, disguised as British officers, infiltrated Cairo and made contact with the Free Officers movement (Egypt), who were attempting to defect to the Axis. Their plans ultimately fell through and Eppler and future Egyptian president Anwar Sadat were imprisoned together. According to Sadat, Eppler was visited in his cell by Winston Churchill in 1942 and offered leniency in exchange for a full confession. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by Paul Chevannes (illustrator).
