These violent episodes disrupted what had been a fairly peaceful history of coexistence between Jews and Christians for more than two centuries. Although…the two groups inhabited fundamentally different religious universes, Jews and Christians lived in the same towns, on the same streets, and pursued their lives with minimal interference, often with considerable cooperation. However, the events of 1096 caused relations between the two communities to deteriorate, with Jewish communities suffering as a result. The careful analyses of people, events, and texts provide a balanced perspective on the fate of twelfth-century Jewish communities. The contributors reveal considerable evidence that old routines and interactions between Christians and Jews persisted throughout this volatile period. The essays intentionally highlight areas of common or parallel activity: in vernacular literature, in biblical exegesis, in piety and mysticism, in the social context of conversion, in relations with prelates and monarchs, in coping in a time of change, renewal, and upheaval. Most importantly, the contributors insist on integrating both Jewish and Christian perspectives into the larger history of a very complex and increasingly urban twelfth-century Europe. Early binding, but likely early 19th century; not contemporary with the book or with its famous owner. Brown leather. Black title label dated 1671 on the spine. 3 works bound together, each with its own title page and separate pagi…nation. More importantly is the early ownership name on the title page of the first section. It is George Read of Delaware. The signature is at the extreme top edge and has been partially shaved off by a binder who trimmed the top margin, but it is entirely legible and entirely recognizable. Read was one of only two people who signed the Declaration of Independence, the the Constitution and the original 1774 petition to the King. He was the first Senator from Delaware upon the establishment of the Federal Government. Read is the only Signer of the Declaration to have voted against Independence (and against the Declaration itself). He is a little celebrated but still significant & deserved further study (anyone want to write a musical about him?). This volume from his library was already 100 years old when he owned it. First section is 166 pages. Second section (separate title page and different publisher) 255 pages. Third section (Terrestrial Globe) has a separate title page, but pagination continues through page 329. All the sections bound together in most of the copies currently available. Binding good and tight. Margins trimmed closer than when the pages were new, particularly at the bottom. Handwritten on the title page of the first section, beneath Gregory's name, "Prebendary of Sarum & Chichester." Pencil note on the inside front cover says "Autograph of one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Very scarce. $3.00." Free endpaper has been clipped -- there is an inch neatly cut from the top edge. A remarkable historical object & also a scarce book. Please email with questions or to request photos.
