The author presents a theory that consuming animal protein can cause dysentery, which is detailed in a thorough discussion of the digestive process. Chapters also examine dysentery's link to other diseases, including cholera and malaria. The author's research into nitrous and nitric acids argues that these substances are the true cause of dysentery. While examining the putrefaction that occurs during digestion, the author explains other health concerns that arise when the stomach's gastric juices fail to properly break down food, which include fevers, upset stomachs, and acid reflux. Ultimately, this book's insights provide a scientific basis for understanding and combating dysentery and related ailments, making it essential reading for medical professionals and general readers concerned about digestive health. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Full-Leather. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Physician and citizen of Rochester, Monroe County, N.Y., is the way John G. Vought, author of this early Rochester medical book, identifies himself on the title. His lengthy dedications are several: to the medical subscribers, to the married ladies of the U.S.A. Vought thoroughly reviews the medical literature on bowel complaints and presents many specific cures. He reports his own experiments from 1771 on the common earth-worm to ascertain the anthelmintic virtues of a variety of substances (pp. 144-151). Pages 257-178 are recipes useful to families. A detailed advertisement for 'Dr. Leather bound, worn at the tips, hinges fine. Some foxing throughout. Rear free end paper has longhand remedy written in. Vought's Chemical Anti-dysenteric Medicine', and two other remedies, along with a long list of the name and location (mainly N.Y.S. but including Penn., Baltimore, New Orleans, Virginia, Savannah, Ohio, N.J., etc.) of agents (druggists and booksellers) appear on pages 209 to 216. In 1829 Vought published a brief pamphlet announcing the availability of prescriptions at the New York Infirmary for Diseases of the Bowels removed to Masonic Hall, opposite the New York Hospital.
