Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -'I regret to see that my book has turned out un fiasco solenne'James Joyce's disillusion with the publication of Dubliners in 1914 was the result of ten years battling with publishers, resisting their demands to remove swear words, real place names and much else, including two entire stories. Although only 24 when he signed his first publishing contract for the book, Joyce already knew its worth: to alter it in any way would 'retard the course of civilisation in Ireland'.Joyce's aim was to tell the truth - to create a work of art that would reflect life in Ireland at the turn of the last century and by rejecting euphemism, reveal to the Irish the unromantic reality the recognition of which would lead to the spiritual liberation of the country. Each of the fifteen stories offers a glimpse of the lives of ordinary Dubliners - a death, an encounter, an opportunity not taken, a memory rekindled - and collectively they paint a portrait of a nation. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. 279 pp. Englisch.

Wraps. Condition: Very good. Kirsten S. Johnson (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. [10, 218. [4] pages. Several of these stories first appears in different versions in the following magazines: The Falcon, New Letter, The Ohio Review, and The Journal of Irish Literature. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: For Bob, For his being himself and being alert when most have gone to sleep. Best Wishes, Bill Joyce, April 26, 1990. This collection of short stories contains tales of magic, realism, and yearning. Contains seven stories: The Recorder of Births and Deaths; Mrs. Bowles' Lover; You Can't Lose With an Echo Harp; My Family Coat of Arms; My Grandfather's Bones; The Day the Dog Came to Confession; and From the Hook of Transparent Deceits. In this volume of unique stories, Joyce plows the field of his first book again, the rubble of the American Dream, and uncovers tales of magic, realism, and yearning. From his hilarious account of a love affair between members of the "senior set" (Mrs. Bowles Lover) to the frankly mystical account of how his grandfather was chewed up piece by piece in a steel mill (My Grandfather's Bones), Joyce writes in a way that is unclassifiable. It is even possible to find the ghost of Kafka haunting the title story. In 1988, Watermark Books decided to establish a publishing imprint to bring to the market under-recognized literary fiction and regional books of national significance. The Watermark reputation generated enough industry interest for its books to receive review attention in Publishers Weekly, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and other prestigious book periodicals. William Joyce was born in Swissvale, Pennsylvania in 1941. In 1959 he wins a TV Guide Scholarship in Journalism to Penn State University. After graduation in 1963 he worked for a CBS affiliate and worked closely with Mike Wallace on an investigative report. In 1966, he joined the Iowa Writers Workshop, studying with Richard Yates, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and Jose Donoso. Serves as a teaching assistant with office mate John Irving. Receives an MFA degree. Joyce's first published poem in Western Humanities Review results in the banning of the magazine at the University of Utah, and subsequent student protests. In Provincetown, Joyce meets Norman Mailer who later writes the jacket blurb for Joyce's first novel. In 1976 - 1977, he becomes first creative writer in U.S. to win Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship ($10,000), receives Connecticut Fiction Grant, NEA residency fellowship, and is invited by Texas Arts Commission to become Poet-in-Residence. David Ray, publisher of New Letters, sends Joyce's short stories to Gordon Lish, fiction editor of Esquire and head of fiction at Knopf; Lish introduces Joyce to Lynn Nesbit founder of ICM Talent Agency who agrees to take Joyce on. 1982 - 1987, First Born of an Ass is rejected by 57 U.S. publishers until Barney Rosset acquires it and funnels the novel to Henry Holt & Co. Finally published in 1990, a NY Times Reviewer writes, "The decade has barely begun but let's hope before it ends this novel is out of print." Kurt Vonnegut, Joyce's former mentor, is incensed. He organizes Manhattan's independent booksellers who put a blowup of the Times' review, Joyce's photo, and stacks of First Born of an Ass in windows. Meanwhile, two volumes of poetry are published, For Women Who Moan and Listen America, You Don't Even Own Your Name. Poets & Writers magazine runs an article on Joyce's unusual sales method for hustling these books. Listen America and The State of American Poetry, are sent by an unknown person to Cuba. They are translated and published by Opcion magazine. Jose Marti Publishing House offers a two-book contract. Joyce celebrates the occasion by visiting Cuba, then opens a bordello in a Vedado mansion, renting to tourists. The Cuban government allows him to operate until he assaults an undercover cop. In jail he writes an essay on B. Traven, the final essay in the U.S. edition of Miller, Bukowski, and Their Enemies.

First published in 1983, this copy is the first edition with an introduction by Ann Douglas, published by Penguin Books in 1999, first printing with "1" as the lowest number in print number line on copyright page. From rear cover: "The name Joyce Johnson may not immediately come to mind when chronicling the art and lives of the Beats. Yet twenty-one-year-old Joyce, nee Glassman, was there at the very moment Kerouac became famous overnight with the publication of On the Road. During the charmed years of the late Fifties, as a cultural revolution blossomed in downtown New York, she was part of an extraordinary circle that included Allen Ginsberg, LeRoi and Hettie Jones, Gregory Corso, Robert Frank, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. Born into the Silent Generation, Johnson came of age during a critical transitional time when most unmarried young women did not leave home, and only those who dared to break the rules could achieve sexual liberation. At Barnard College, Joyce Johnson began breaking rules even before she met Kerouac and Ginsberg; what she and the other women in their circle would discover were the risks, the hardships, and the heady excitement of trying to live as freely as the rebels they loved.".
