Paul Joly de Maizeroy (1719-1780) in questo volume introduce il termine 'strategia' e strategico nella lingua francese. Per Mazaroy la condotta della guerra è la scienza del generale, chiamata strategia dei Greci; si basa sulla tattica, ma il comando appartiene al genio. La strategia militare o strategia generale si trova tra la grande strategia da un lato, e la logistica, le operazioni e tattica dall'altro.
