Benedict Richard Pierce Macintyre (born 25 December 1963) is a British author, historian, and columnist writing for The Times newspaper. His columns range from current affairs to historical controversies. Macintyre is the author of a book on the gentleman criminal Adam Worth, The Napoleon of Crime: The Life and Times of Adam Worth, Master Thief. He also wrote The Man Who Would Be King: The First American in Afghanistan, and a book on Eddie Chapman, a double agent of Germany and Britain during the Second World War, titled Agent Zigzag: The True Wartime Story of Eddie Chapman: Lover, Betrayer, Hero, Spy. Four of his books have recently been made into documentaries for the BBC: Operation Mincemeat, DOUBLE AGENT: The Eddie Chapman Story, Double Cross - The True Story of the D Day Spies and Kim Philby - His Most Intimate Betrayal. Derived from a review published in a British newspaper: Operation Mincemeat was geared to making the Nazis believe that the Allies intended in early 1943 to push up into Europe through Greece and Sardinia rather than Italy. The artifice letters and other documentation found on the body of a supposedly drowned British officer washed up on the shores of southern Spain. Ewen Montagu, a Jewish barrister who was NID representative on the Twenty Committee, took on organizational responsibility for Mincemeat. He found the necessary dead body and set about establishing this unfortunate's new identity as Major Martin, courier of official letters hinting at an invasion through Greece and Sardinia. Macintyre has drawn on personal accounts as well as new material. His unraveling of what happened is brilliant - from the reactions of German spies in Spain to the fine tuning by Britain's spy master in Madrid.
