Paperback. Condition: Very Good. One day, best friends Jonas and Stephanie decided they would write a book together, and before a word was even written they already had a title for it: It Just Happened the Other Day: A True Story. Whenever Stephanie told a story, she would begin by saying, It just happened the other day, even if what she was about to say happened months or even years before. And whenever Jonas told a story, he would begin by saying, It's a true story, even when he was just telling a joke. Due to unforeseen events, the pair never got to write their book. Until now. --------------------------A book that helps people know they can come out of any situation, no matter how bad it seems, and continue on a positive journey through life.-------------------------- FORWARD BY THE AUTHORIt has been twelve years since I first published this book, and whenever I revisit this story, I'm always struck by the raw emotional honesty-glimpses of emotional states that now feel foreign. This book was written in real-time as I processed the experiences that form each chapter. Entire chapters are copied verbatim from my journals, and the in-between moments were composed therapeutically to process, connect, and make sense of what had happened. So while these raw emotions now feel foreign, they are no less foundations of my character's heredity-the DNA that informs who I am and why I am. Imagine reading a book about one of your past lives. For me, that's what revisiting this book is like. As a reviewer once noted, you may find that the style of writing is very unique, but a little depressing and sometimes hard to follow. As hard as it may be to follow, the confusing narrative is by design-meant to mimic the confused emotional state I was experiencing in the moment that these events were happening. From one chapter to the next, the narrative might jump around forwards or backwards in time by days, weeks, months, or even years-mirroring the shaken rumination, upside down reality, and utterly confusing despair I was experiencing. To smooth out the narrative would be a tacit lie and a disservice to the story and to the readers. With the gift of time, I've discovered the fascinating truth behind the adage This too shall pass-for all pain eventually gives way to new joy, which in turn eventually gives way to new pain. As for me, I look forward with anticipation and excitement to what's next JONAS CAIN January 2022.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "We always have a choice to live the moment as a cause of resentment or as a cause for joy."-Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) The insights of Henri Nouwen have shown millions of people how to choose joy in any moment-even moments full of pain and brokenness. Few spiritual writers have ever spoken so powerfully and directly to the heart as he did, in part because he compassionately bared his own soul and struggles to his readers, but also because he deeply understood that God can be discovered in every aspect of ourselves, even-almost especially-in the parts we find difficult to acknowledge. This anthology of Nouwen's teaching covers all his major themes-God, love, life, death, psychology, woundedness, healing, and social action-and is drawn from among his more than forty books. It's the perfect, compact introduction to this brilliant and humble Catholic priest whom Christianity Today called "one of the world's great spiritual writers.".…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Ira Levin's monumental Broadway success Deathtrap is an equal-parts thrilling and laughter-provoking, who'll-do-it. This new edition includes an introduction by celebrated theatre critic Peter Filichia.Once-revered playwright Sidney Bruhl has a string of recent flops to his credit, when he's sent an instant-hit of a new play written by a novice former writing student. Is Sidney desperate enough to kill to claim the unknown work as his own? Envy, ambition, betrayal, and hidden agendas intertwine in this clever and intricately plotted comedic thriller. Laugh-out-loud dialogue and a series of gasp-inducing plot twists have kept audiences--and readers--on the edge of their seats for nearly fifty years. The fifth longest-running play in Broadway history, Deathtrap's hybrid comedy-thriller format was a new animal when introduced by Levin in 1978. Adapted into the hit film starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve, Edgar Award-winning Deathtrap remains one of the most frequently-produced plays, and was one of the inspirations for the 2019 film Knives Out. Jonas, Ann (illustrator).…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. A New Reality: Human Evolution for a Sustainable Future provides a startling, fresh new message of understanding, perspective and hope for today's tense, rapid-fire, kaleidoscopically changing world. A New Reality: Human Evolution for a Sustainable Future provides a startling, fresh new message of understanding, perspective and hope for today's tense, rapid-fire, kaleidoscopically changing world. Drawn from the writings of visionary scientist Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine, extended and developed by his son Jonathan, the message of the book explodes from the past and sheds light on tensions that besiege us and the currents of discord that are raging as these words are written. More importantly, it indicates a way forward out of our current situation. Written by a world-famous doctor and folk hero, based on population data, rich in visual imagery, elegantly designed, and clearly written, A New Reality is unique in the marketplace. Readable in one or two sittings, it is accessible to the general reader while at the same time being of essential value to policy makers and academics. Its brevity and simplicity of design belie the importance and sophistication of its message. We are at a point in the course of human social evolution when the demands of survival converge with the higher ideals of humankind and the well-being and flourishing of human society. It is up to us to see that we navigate this transition, adapting to and emerging in a new reality. --A New Reality Our country is divided and polarized. Terrorism is a major threat throughout much of the world. Mass migrations are causing national and international tension. Population growth continues to increase, especially in the developing regions of the world. Controversy rages as to the use of fossil fuels versus the development of alternative forms of energy. Disagreement continues about climate change. Opposing currents of opinion collide as to how much we should help other areas in the world and how much to help ourselves. Basic values are in conflict. More than 40 years ago, Jonas Salk understood that we are at a unique moment in the history of the human species. After centuries of increase, population growth has begun to slow and is trending toward equilibrium. This change is accompanied by an equally significant change in human values--a shift from those based on unlimited availability of resources, unremitting growth, excess, independence, competition and short-term thinking to those based on limits, equilibrium, balance, interdependence, cooperation and long-term thinking. This momentous transition is the source of far-reaching tension and conflict. The way through this difficult era is to understand its basis and to focus on new values that will be of the greatest benefit to humankind. There is an urgency, however, and failure to adapt will result in disaster both for humanity and for the planet as a whole. A New Reality delivers a message of both caution and hope. Readers across the social and political spectrum will find it a reasoned and balanced counterpoint to current social and political trends. Its elegant design and long-range perspective will appeal to general readers, policy makers, millennials, baby boomers, teachers, and students, filling a need in the marketplace for a work of positivity and wisdom in otherwise bleak times.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The international publishing sensation--over six million copies sold worldwide A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka) decides it's not too late to start over . . . After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant). It would be the adventure of a lifetime for anyone else, but Allan has a larger-than-life backstory: Not only has he witnessed some of the most important events of the twentieth century, but he has actually played a key role in them. Starting out in munitions as a boy, he somehow finds himself involved in many of the key explosions of the twentieth century and travels the world, sharing meals and more with everyone from Stalin, Churchill, and Truman to Mao, Franco, and de Gaulle. Quirky and utterly unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared has charmed readers across the world.…

A heartfelt exploration of the cost of life and love--and the importance of the little things--from the author of the international bestseller, The Room Hilarious, profound, and achingly true-to-life, The Invoice explores the true nature of happiness through the eyes of hero you won't soon forget. A passionate film buff, our hero's life revolves around his part-time job at a video store, the company of a few precious friends, and a daily routine that more often than not concludes with pizza and movie in his treasured small space in Stockholm. When he receives an astronomical invoice from a random national bureaucratic agency, everything will tumble into madness as he calls the hotline night and day to find out why he is the recipient of the largest bill in the entire country. What is the price of a cherished memory? How much would you pay for a beautiful summer day? How will our carefree idealist, who is content with so little and has no chance of paying it back, find a way out of this mess? All these questions pull you through The Invoice and prove once again that Jonas Karlsson is simply a master of entertaining, intelligent, and life-affirming work.…
