Signed "Jonathan Latimer" (full name only) diagonally to otherwise blank FFE. Bottom half-inch of jacket spine is missing. Tough newspaper guy wakes up next to an attractive young blonde he doesn't know. And . . . she's dead. Latimer, author of the hard-boiled (and hard-to-find) "Solomon's Vineyard" (1941) was a screenwriter who adapted Hammett's "The Glass Key" (1942) and "The Big Clock" (1948), among others, eventually moving on to write either 26 or 32 (tallies differ) episodes of television's "Perry Mason." Signed 1950s mystery; 250 pp., here reduced from $230. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Good-plus. Stated first edition. Red boards, red topstain. NO dust jacket. Inscribed "To Pat Ball" and signed "Jonathan Latimer" to the blank FFE. (Robert "Pat" Ball was perhaps America's best pre-World War II African-American golfer -- when blacks were banned from the PGA and instead competed on the "Chitlin' Circuit" of the United Golfers' Association -- but it's a common name and whether Latimer signed to THAT Pat Ball we can't be sure.) Third novel (called by some his "madcap masterpiece") by Latimer, who went on to become a screen writer in Hollywood, adapting Hammett's "The Glass Key" (1942) and Kenneth Fearing's "The Big Clock" (1948), among others, and eventually moving on to write either 26 or 32 (tallies differ) episodes of television's "Perry Mason." The 1938 Universal film of "Lady in the Morgue" (photography by Stanley Cortez) starred Preston Foster, Patricia Ellis, Wild Bill Elliott (billed as Gordon Elliott) and blonde bombshell Barbara Pepper, probably now best remembered as the first Doris Ziffel in the situation comedy "Green Acres" (1965-68). Wise-cracking detective mystery. 296 pp. Reduced from $540.As with all our items priced higher than $90, this item will be shipped "signature required.". Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. 8vo. Black mesh cloth with green lettering and decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 306pp. Pictorial title page, illustration. Near fine/very good. Jacket mildly edgeworn, mainly at spine head and tail; inoffensive scrape (likely from price sticker removal) at upper right of jacket front panel. Handsome and super tight first of this edition, being Latimer's 1935 title "Headed for a Hearse" (Doubleday, Doran) reissued to coincide with the 1937 mystery film starring Preston Foster. This copy bears a fine autograph addition: Green front flyleaf bears a 2½" X 2½" yellow slip signed in ink by Foster's co-star, Carol Hughes. Foster plays smart aleck New York detective Bill Crane and Hughes (1910-95) plays Emily Lou Martin. A superb, unusual copy.
