At that time the Republic was at war with France. It was not until 1794 that Cornelius returned to get married. Because his wife quickly became pregnant, he had to return alone. During the trip he heard that the Republic was now at war with England again due to political complications (the patriots had come to power), but he managed to bring the fleet safely to Norway. He was given a year's leave to collect his wife and daughter. Six more children would be born in the Netherlands. As soon as he returned, he was given command of a ship in the squadron that had to repel the Russian-English fleet. Not all Dutch captains were pro-patriotic and some defected to the English. Cornelius had remained neutral but was still condemned by the High Council of the Sea and exiled. He settled with his family on the Duivenvoorde estate near Kleef. He wrote a number of travel stories here and started a publication to prove his innocence. After the Republic was annexed by France, Cornelius was allowed to return and the family settled in Vught. In 1814 he was rehabilitated. In 1815 the family left for The Hague, where Cornelius also held all kinds of administrative positions.

Cornelius de Jong van Rodenburgh (1762-1838) was Captain of the Dutch war frigate Scipio, and sailed to the Cape of Good Hope, Ireland and Norway in the years from 1791 to 1797. Chapters 2 to 8 describe the Cape and its history, its inhabitants, the many (wild) animals living in southern Africa, the geography of the area, and more. Chapters 9 and 10 describe Cork, its public buildings, inhabitants, trade, etc. Chapters 13-18 cover Norway, its inhabitants, fauna, climate, mines, etc. Four plates depict the costumes of farmers (men and women) from different parts of Norway. Also included is a folding plate depicting a snowy hill with skiing soldiers, with an early description of the sport and its role within the Norwegian army. With an owner's inscription on half-title.
