Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN COLLECTOR BY JOSE DE AZEREDO PERDIGAO LISBON 1979. I must candidly admit that I had no idea who Mr. Gulbenkian was but as usual, Wikipedia set me straight, to wit: "Calouste Gulbenkian (23 March 1869 20 July 1955) was a British businessman and philanthropist of Armenian origin. He played a major role in making the petroleum reserves of the Middle East available to Western development and is credited with being the first person to exploit Iraqi oil. Gulbenkian travelled extensively and lived in a number of cities including Constantinople, London, Paris, and Lisbon. Throughout his life, Gulbenkian was involved with many philanthropic activities including the establishment of schools, hospitals, and churches. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a private foundation based in Portugal, was started at his bequest in 1956 and continues to promote arts, charity, education, and science throughout the world. It is now among the largest foundations in Europe. By the end of his life, he had become one of the world's wealthiest individuals and his art acquisitions one of the greatest private collections." So, I am very pleased to be able to offer for your consideration a book about his art collection, and as the Author would want, about his love of art. Please find the simply titled book: "Calouste Gulbenkian Collector," by Jose de Azeredo Perdigao. This large and luxurious hard cover book (8 ¾ x 11 ¼ inches, 237 pages) was published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon, dated 1979. The book is bound in light brown cloth with gilt decorations on both covers, front and rear and gilt titles on the spine. There is a satin ribbon page marker. The book is very well illustrated and as you will see from the photos, both color and b&w, Mr. Gulbenkian had an acute eye for the fine arts. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean, their gilt bright and with just the slightest bit of bumping to the spine tips. Inside, the book is unmarked but the first few pages show some incipient but very light foxing or are they smoke stains. Otherwise, the interior pages and plates are clean, bright and attractive, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
